May 12, 1929 - Dec. 15,2010 Abel was born on May 12, 1929 to Jose Francisco Gorgita and Maria Jose Leal on a dairy farm in Lemore, CA. He was the youngest of 9 children along with his siblings Mary, Josephine, Lena, Joe, Conceicao, Connie, Vera and Manny., It was there that he learned "what hard work really was". While growing up in Lemore, Abel and his family would spend each summer on the beach fishing. This is where he formed his love for the sea., Abel, along with his two brothers became commercial fishermen. He bought the boat "Swordfish" and spent over 40 years as a fisherman., His love of the sea met it's match when Abel met the beautiful Miriam Bertelsen. They were married on January 20, 1951 and formed a union that would last almost 60 years., From their love they had five beloved children: Becky, Andy, Rosie, Julie and Sarah, along with 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. When Abel retired he enjoyed spending his time speaking to others about the promises spoken of in the bible., Being one of Jehovahs Witnesses he felt this was a commission given to all of Jesus's followers. He stayed faithful to that commission. |

Beverly Jean Reilly, 64, of Lone Pine, Calif., died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2010. Beverly was born in Pasadena, Calif., and raised in the Owens Valley. Bev was a young lady when her parents, Emil and Esther Freitag, had to move the family in search of work. Having worked hard all her life, Bev made her way back home to Lone Pine, where she had the space to enjoy her family, friends and horses. In Bev''s front yard you can find the fifth generation of her favorite horse, Nufara. As a talented rider, Bev completed the Tevis Cup, placed tenth in the Nevada All-State and was referred to as a "Cherub on an Arab" (the breed of horse she loved so much). Bev''s lifestyle made it impossible to have friends, as they all became part of her family. That was proven true over and over with her endurance riding family, the Anchor Ranch and the communities of Lone Pine, Tehachapi and San Luis Obispo. As life continued for Bev, she found more time for quilting, family and her best friend and sister, Kathy Yeager. Bev and Kathy where inseparable in all things - from taking a walk to building quilts for many weddings and grandchildren. In simple terms, Bev had "crossed the Emigrant Trail" with her sister, Kathy, following the tracks of her dear friend, Bill Thornburg. Bev is survived and loved by her husband, Dennis Reilly; daughter, Alie (Jeff) McKee; sister, Debbie Freitag; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Emil and Esther Freitag. A celebration of life of the two sisters, Bev Reilly and Kathy Yeager, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011, at the Santa Margarita Ranch Asistencia. A family fund has been set up in the name of Jeff and Alie McKee at the Santa Lucia Bank. Contributions can be sent to P.O. Box 200, Santa Margarita, CA 93453, or any Santa Lucia Bank branch. |

BRAVO, JOSE MARIA of Ramona 09/10/1919-12/24/2010 American Cremation Service (760) 480-8483 |
80 years old, passed on at home on December 27, 2010. He was born on March 20, 1930 in Eureka, CA to George H. and Mabel May Retzloff. He had three brothers, Vernon Clark, James, and Thomas. Vernon died in the south Pacific during World War II. James, a gifted football player and World War II veteran, passed away in 2002. Jack grew up in Eureka and attended local schools. In his early years, he was an avid outdoors man and horseman who hunted, fished, and raised cattle on the various family ranches in Larabee Creek, Showers Pass, Blocksburg, Bridgeville, and Cold Spring. Both his dad and Uncle Walt owned the roadside billboard business between Medford and Fort Bragg, which enabled Jack and his brothers to spend summers and holidays in the outdoors. In junior high school and high school Jack became interested in sports, and excelled in track, basketball, and football. He was the star halfback in football at Eureka High School and went on to star for the undefeated Santa Rosa Junior College Bear Cats. His football prowess as a halfback for Santa Rosa led to Jack being nominated "Little All American" and he was actively recruited by many top colleges, including Stanford University, University of Oregon, and University of San Francisco. He was one of the few guys who could run for a touchdown while waving to a girlfriend in the stands. He eventually chose to go to the University of San Francisco and was a reserve halfback on the famous 1950 USF team which went undefeated but was not invited to any bowl games because the team had two star players who were black. The University of San Francisco football program was dismantled after that year. Jack was in the Army from 1951 through 1954 and was stationed around the country before settling at Fort Ord. He married Mitzi LaVerne Gregori in 1951 and his son Michael was born in 1952 at Fort Ord. Jack was honorably discharged in early 1954 and moved back to Eureka where his second child Cynthia Ann was born that year. Jack enrolled at Humboldt State College, played halfback for the 1954 team, and was a star player. He later began working for Bernie Anderson Pontiac where he was a top car salesman, and then went on to work for Ernest Pierson Company where he sold real estate. Jack was Ernest's top salesman for a number of years and the pair were lifelong friends. Jack decided to become a real estate appraiser in the early 1960s and went on to work for the Humboldt County Assessor's Office as an appraiser. During this time, third child Debra Lynn was born and Jack decided it was time to work independently as a fee appraiser, his main occupation for the rest of his life. Jack was separated from his wife Mitzi in 1970 and officially divorced in 1975. During that time he fell in love with Cindy Olsen. Jack was very successful in business. His expertise was in making money work for him. Jack was a shrewd real estate investor who owned many commercial and rental properties in Humboldt County. In 1989, Jack was appointed as a California Probate Referee for Humboldt and Del Norte Counties by former Governor Gray Davis and held that position for 9 years. In addition, he wanted to be in a business that was "fun." One such business was horse racing, a sport he always loved. In 1979, he and Cindy bought their first horse, "Struttin' Honey,"and it was an immediate love affair with horse racing. They traveled throughout the Unites States, going to as many race tracks as possible. Over the past 30 years, they owned many Stakes horses, including their pride and joy, "Mr. Double Down," who won the $200,000 Hollywood Express Race in 1998. Their other horses included R. Payday, Lady Las Vegas, Blue Avenue, Mr. Megabucks, Swayaway (their current 3 year old), and many more. Jack could be seen on a daily basis at the Redwood Acres Turf Club. There was rarely a day that he would miss betting on horses. He enjoyed his family of friends at the Turf Club. Jack was also a master at poker and other card games. For a number of years, many prominent citizens of Humboldt County could often be found at the Retzloff home playing all-nighters on weekends. Jack played at major poker tournaments in Reno and Las Vegas before Indian casinos became legal in California. Jack taught his children how to play various card games when they were very young and all were proficient players. His daughter Debbie and he often played poker tournaments together locally and in Las Vegas. Jack's purpose in life seems to have been to have fun, and he was very good at that. He was always out to have a good time first and work second. He was an "original." He was very outgoing and people oriented and he never met a stranger. He didn't have a problem with "breaking the rules," and almost always managed to talk his way out of trouble. On the phone, when spelling his last name out for people, he always pointed out that the double Fs in his last name stood for "double friendly." Jack was a San Francisco Giants fan from the time the team moved to California from New York and was part of the Giants Boosters Club for years. He and Cindy traveled all over the states and Canada to watch them play. After years of torture, he was able to take great delight that he was able to see his favorite team win the World Series. Jack and Cindy were world travelers but their favorite spot was Aruba, where they went for several weeks every year. Jack's love for Blackjack and Texas Hold'em made Las Vegas their next favorite and most frequent destination. Jack was a proud Dad of three children and grandfather of six. There wasn't a day that passed when he wasn't bragging about their accomplishments. Jack is survived by his long time companion, Cindy K. Olsen; his son Michael (Rose); his daughter Cynthia Retzloff McKenzie (Scott); his daughter Debbie Olson (Randy); his grandchildren Chelsea Retzloff, Katy McKenzie, Kara McKenzie, Sean Retzloff, Randy Olson, and Lacey Olson; his brother Tom Retzloff and Tom's wife Kathy; his nephew Todd Retzloff (Jennifer); his niece Kristine Benzow (Aaron); nephew Ken Retzloff (Debbie); his grandnephews Justin Retzloff, Troy Retzloff, and William Benzow; his grand nieces Rebecca and Jody; and his brother-in-law Gerald Hoopes, Gerald's wife Merilea Partch, and their son Roy Partch. Jack's extended family is so large that it is impossible to list them all. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the Humboldt Area Foundation in memory of Jack Retzloff for the "Friends of the Humboldt County Fair Fund." 373 Indianola Rd, Bayside, ca 95524. Pall bearers are Dave DeVoto, Bill Pittman, Lawrence Lazio, Jack Macdonald, Pat Murphy, and Dave McGinty. Honorary pall bearers will be Jack Pederson, Henry Ramos, and Richard Mann. Paul Fremont Brown Resident of Saratoga and Los Gatos Passed into the arms of Jesus on December 19, age 89. Paul is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Alice, his children, Diane Brown and Mike Haidet, Darrell and Anne Brown, Judy and Jorge Arreygue, and Jana and Jeff Galt. In addition, he leaves ten grandchildren and a great-grandson, about whom he would brag if you just gave him a moment. Born in Iowa on March 10, 1921, Paul grew up in Dickenson, North Dakota, where he met his sweetheart at age 17. Five years later, after earning a teaching degree from Dickenson State and being commissioned as a lieutenant in the Air Force, Paul and Alice were married. Paul served in Alaska as a meteorologist during WWII. Paul earned an Engineering Degree from University of Washington and a Master's Degree in Cybernetic Systems from San Jose State. His post-war career began in Seattle with Boeing. In 1956 he and Alice moved to the Bay Area where he worked for Lockheed until 1983. He was the chief quality control officer for the Hubble Space Telescope project and greatly enjoyed downloading incredible photographs from http://hubble.nasa.gov. In retirement, Paul became a writer, publishing his first book, From Here to Retirement, in 1988. He also wrote a two volume historical novel based on the life of his father, a Baptist circuit-rider in the North Dakota Badlands during the Great Depression. He loved piloting a private plane and spent many years teaching an Adult Bible Study class at Saratoga Presbyterian Church. Paul was a devout Catholic, attending mass and receiving holy communion regularly before his illness., As a teenager, his passion was baseball, playing for his high school and local travel teams. Team coach and nephew Phil Rodriguez told the concerned and cheering family, "he demanded to pitch". Paul always looked forward to family get-togethers at Rosarito Beach. He also loved to go camping, travel around Southern California to softball games, zoos and amusement parks with his sister, Irene and brother-in-law, Max, occasionally asking, "when are you taking me somewhere?", His mother's last wish was for family to take care of her "hijo". Her wish was honored., Special recognition to siblings, Johnny Galvan and wife, Esther, Felicitas Rodriguez, Irene Cardona and husband, Max, and Stella Valdez for his care. Preceding him in death besides his father and mother are brothers, Sixtos (wife Frances) Galvan, Alex Galvan, and Henry Galvan; sisters, Jennie (husband Piedad) Castro and Susie Noriega; brother-in-law, Rigoberto Rodriguez, all of Santa Paula; and brother-in-law, Mike Martinez of Merced. Supervision and staff members were superb. Also, Dr. Meyers and staff from Santa Paula, Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura, and care givers, Veronica Lopez and Maria Tolero for their concern and loving care during his post surgery illness., Paul, your journey to the beauty of Heaven with Christ the Lord has only just begun. Father, take his soul and enrich him with Your love, join him with his mother and father. He always believed in You, God the Almighty. God Bless you Paul, we will miss you dearly. 02/09/30 to 12/25/2010 Robert Fowler Sr. was taken home to celebrate our Savior's birth in the early hours of Christmas morning, December 25, 2010. We mourn his passing but celebrate his wonderful life., He was a loving husband to "the first girl he ever kissed", his wife of 58 years, Kay Fowler and a devoted father to four children; Kathleen Fowler Ellis (who was waiting for him in heaven), Robert Fowler Jr. (Melody), Maureen Fowler Sumner (John) and Michael Fowler. Grandpa Bob was a beloved story-teller and faithful supporter of his grandchildren; Trevor Ellis and wife Shauna, Ashley Sumner Young and husband Steve, Sean Fowler, Kayley Fowler and James Fowler. He was a man of honor who was loyal to God, his country and his family. He will be deeply missed by many from California to New York., Bob's life was rich and full. He was born to Ella Mae and George Fowler and was a brother to George Fowler Jr., and sisters Gerry Fowler Keating and Patty Fowler Meister. He was raised in Peekskill, NY where he served the church as a young Altar boy, worked as a soda jerk and played football for his High School team, and as he reminded us many times helped them win the Hudson Valley league championship. Bob married the love of his life, Kay Fowler in 1952 and then left to proudly serve his country in the Korean War as a First Lt. He returned home from the war to his young bride and embarked upon his career. Bob and Kay settled in Port Washington out on Long Island and shared many happy times raising their young family and cherished friends. In 1969 a career opportunity led him to move his family to Palos Verdes, California. The family then settled in Thousand Oaks., His entrepreneurial spirit led him to many business ventures, but in 1976 he established K.B. Fowler Trucking which continues to this day. Bob was very proud of what he accomplished and cared deeply about his employees and customers. Bob loved the ocean and sailing and spent countless hours on his many boats with his wife Kay and children off our coast and around the Channel Islands. Those days on the water have created lasting memories for them all. Kay and Bob enjoyed traveling together and went on adventures to Hawaii and Mexico. They chartered a boat through the Caribbean and took a dream trip to the land of his fathers; Ireland where Bob had the temerity to sing Danny Boy to the Irish in an Irish pub (there wasn't a dry eye in the house)., He was known for his sense of humor, wealth of sayings and clich's for all occasions, ever-present smile and his ability to look on the bright side of things... no one that met Bob, forgot Bob. His heart was innately kind and he genuinely loved people, most of all his wife and his family. As we mourn, he would remind us to take things "one day at a time, sweet Jesus." and know we will see him again one day., A favorite saying he would spontaneously quote to people, (strangers and family alike) is a traditional Irish blessing; May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face; the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand. Until we meet again we will remember you with love-your family. In celebration of Bob's life a Memorial Service will be held on Friday, December 31, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park, Camarillo. |

William Henry Schofield, III September 15, 1920 - December 28, 2010 After ninety years, Bill left this life peacefully surrounded by the love and affection of his assembled family. Bill was born in Newark, NJ and grew up in Orange, NJ. He attended the Brothers College of Drew University in Madison, NJ and earned his B.A. degree from, . He later earned the equivalent of a Masters Degree from the graduate program in Hospital Administration at the University of Toronto. Bill married Nancy Foster in 1949 and they moved to Oswego, NY where he was appointed Executive Secretary of the Oswego County Health Association. During the 1950's and '60's he worked as a hospital administrator at the Kessler Rehabilitation Institute in West Orange, NJ, the Hyde Rehabilitation Hospital in Bath, ME, the Cottage Hospital in Woodville, NH, the Arthur R Gould Memorial Hospital in Presque Isle, ME, and the Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital in Cape May Courthouse, NJ. In 1966 he became the Executive Vice President of the Hospital Utilization Project in Pittsburgh, PA, retiring from that position in 1985. Soon after retirement, Bill moved to San Rafael (Marinwood), CA to live with his sister Beverly Williams and her husband Jack. After Jack's death in 1994, Bill provided much needed companionship for Bev. In more recent years, Bev was able to return the favor by caring for Bill as his health declined. Bill enjoyed the warm California weather and settled into his new home quickly. He became a member of St Paul's Episcopal Church in San Rafael, was an avid gardener and was an officer in both the Peacock Gap Garden Club and the Chrysanthemum Society of Marin. He also served as a Judge for the National Chrysanthemum Society, Inc. which entailed traveling to and evaluating various shows throughout California. Marinwood was not the optimum location for growing mums, but for a number of years Bill's great friend Jane Morehouse assisted him in his endeavors by providing a backyard blessed with a warm sun and her friendship. Bill had a remarkable memory, especially for names and faces. Family members of all ages often consulted him regarding details of recent events as well as those long past. When there was a fact in doubt, the cry would go out "Bill will know that" - and he always did. He was an avid tennis fan and you could count on him to be glued to the set during Wimbledon and the US Open. He also enjoyed following football at both the college and professional level. Another love was music, especially jazz. As a young man he would make his way into New York City to listen to the popular Big Band groups of that era. In more recent times he could be found at the Margaret Todd Senior Center on Big Band night. Movies were another interest. Saturday nights became "dinner and a movie" night when brother Jerry and his partner Joy would join Bill and Bev for an evening of entertainment. Bill was preceded in death by his wife Nancy and their son, Richard C. Schofield. He is survived by his sister Beverly S. Williams of San Rafael, brother Gerald K. Schofield of Novato, sons Christopher B. Schofield of Boulder Creek, CA and Derek F. Schofield of North Versailles, PA, daughter Anne S. Hunt (Jno) of Wexford, PA, grandchildren Matthew L. Schofield (Ashley) of Santa Cruz, CA, Brendan S. Hunt of Wexford, PA and two great grandchildren, Christopher R. Schofield and Riley T. Neely. He is also survived by loving nieces Adrienne Williams Phalon (Jim) of Novato, CA and Lynn Schofield Clark (Jon) of Golden, CO, and by nephews John L. Williams (Elizabeth) of Clayton, CA, Jeffrey S. Williams (Sherry) of Concord, CA and Robert D. Schofield of Clarence, NY. Many of his eight grandnieces and grandnephews (John, Scott, Katie, Victoria, Matthew, Andrew, Jonathan and Allison), loved and thought of "Uncle" Bill as a second grandfather. Family gatherings will not be the same without him. Bill made this earth a brighter place and he filled the air with his cheerful whistle. He was well loved by his family and friends and will be missed more than words can say. A memorial will be held in his honor on January 2, 2011 at 3:00 PM at Keaton's Redwood Chapel of Marin, 1801 Novato Blvd, Novato, CA. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Sutter VNA and Hospice, 4000 Civic Center Drive, Suite 190, San Rafael, CA 94903, or to a charity of your choice. |

Warren "Hank" Arnold 1971 - 2010 Warren Arnold was born here in Redding to Nedra and Jim Arnold. He was welcomed by older sister Rhonda and big bro Jay. He was the baby and quickly picked up the nick name "Hankie/Hank". Hank idolized and looked up to his big bro n sis greatly! They taught him to appreciate classic rock and 80's pop culture (he's been hooked ever since!). The family spoiled him and catered to his every wish! His friends have often referred to his family as "The Perfect Family" due to the love they showed one another other and all who entered the home. Jimmy and his children shared a love of sports; they could see early on that Hank was gifted. His true passion was baseball. With rides to practice from his sister and hours of catch with his brother and dad, he quickly became a standout athlete. He was a great student. He loved his teachers and classmates. He joined every team and sport he could! His family was always there supporting and cheering him on at every game. Hank attended E.H.S. He played several sports during those years. His smile was a permanent fixture on his face. He was often the class clown with his jokes and pranks. He was popular, he was kind to everyone and also received good grades. Hank chose to attend college close to home as he was a new uncle and wanted to be there for his sister and nephew. He also had a new girlfriend who years later would become his wife (Sheri). Sheri quickly felt loved by him and his family going to BINGO with Nedra and attending Sunday Dinners. In 1994 they were married and bought their 1st home with dreams of filling it with children of their own. "Uncle Hank" was everyone's favorite uncle. After years of trying Daddy got his little "Lamb" on October 27, 1998 Macy Jane Arnold arrived! Proud was an understatement, Hank was on cloud 9! He was such a great dad that friends and family even referred to him as "Daddy". In 2005 the family grew when Jamie, age 15, Born December 15, 1990 became their 2nd daughter. Hank was elated! He would say she was the son he never had. The family enjoyed every minute Daddy had off from the Wal Mart Distro. Center in Red Bluff where he had happily worked for over 13 years. They camped, went to places like Hawaii, Vegas, Disneyland and his favorite place, Cabo San Lucas, MX. They spent several weekends and Holidays with all of the kids up at the Family Cabin in McCloud, where he would spend so many memorable moments doing special things with the family. Hanks family, friends, and co-workers meant so much to him! He treated everyone with love, showered them with gifts and literally had given the clothes off his back. He loved eating at his favorite restaurants and he was well known at several for his "Big Tips". He took the children to movies, bowling, golf, he coached them, played games with them. The time he spent with them was priceless, out of love, and it showed. The kids would laugh with him so hard they would get belly aches! After years of investing in real estate, the Arnolds opened a beautiful salon (Prima) where they worked very hard, often as a family. Then out of nowhere they got a huge surprise, a son, Aiden Judson Roy Arnold born April 5, 2008. Daddy was trying to play catch before the boy could walk. He was looking forward to someday coaching him. Hank would often tell people "My life is so perfect, if I was to die today I could not ask for anything more, I am so lucky!" He was a model father, a doting husband, a loving son, an awesome brother, the funniest uncle, an excellent employee, and a dearest friend! There will never be another like him and we were so lucky to have had him, there will never be another Hank Arnold! Daddy we love you! We know you loved us so much and we will miss you. The world just lost an amazing man. Until we are all with you again, RIP Warren "Hank" Arnold 1971-2010. Hank left behind the broken hearts of his wife Sheri, children Jamie, Macy and Aiden. Parents Jim and Nedra, siblings Jay and Rhonda. The Connor God-Children, nieces and nephews Logan, Deseree, Abe, Hayden, Hayley, Hannah, Taylor, Jordan, DeVante and a grandchild, Mckenzie. Zena Alva Jefferson 93, died December 20th 2010 of a heart attack. She was born and raised in San Jose, California where she attended school, had business college training, and worked as a secretary to the local YMCA director. After WWII she moved to San Francisco where she first worked for the California Bar Association. But her major work was with the wide range of people who passed through the International Institute on Van Ness Avenue during her many years with organization. She somehow found time to do volunteer work for twenty years at St. Francis Hospital. Zena was a person who just plain liked people of all stripes and occupations. She was always ready with a smile, a joke, a comment that made the listener laugh or smile in appreciation of her good humor. Zena enjoyed over 50 years of married life with Jack Jefferson, a well known artist and art instructor, who died ten years ago. They were married in the First Unitarian church where Zena has been an active member. She spent her last ten years living in a retirement hotel in San Francisco where she tried to keep up with her nieces and nephews, grands and great-grands along with friends of many years standing. Her brother Charles and his wife Sylvia made several trips a year from their home in Monmouth, Oregon, to visit and help her, but her main care givers were David Solis and Cecilia Barnard-Solis who visited her frequently from Alameda and helped her regularly in many ways- Cecilia is one of Zena's grand nieces. Other nieces and nephews of long standing include Mrs. Robert Bick of San Jose and nephew John Barnard of Alameda along with grand-nieces and their children. Zena and Jeff joined the Neptune Society of San Francisco who will handle funeral arrangements. |
