DUNCAN, ALEXANDER Jan. 18, 1923 to Sept. 22, 2010 Alex, 87, was born in Dundee, Scotland and was a resident of San Diego since 1969. He served as an engineering officer in the Merchant Navy and loved to talk about his travels to foreign lands. He and his family left Scotland in 1966 for Montreal, Canada. In 1968, they moved to Seattle and a year later moved to San Diego where he worked for NCR Corporation; the same company he worked for in Scotland. He retired in 1986 and continued to enjoy many vacations with his wife Margaret. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Margaret Duncan also a native of Dundee, Scotland, his daughter and son-in-law Sheena and Tom Crayton, two grandchildren Brad Crayton (wife Kelly) and Courtney Murphy (husband Josh) and three great- grandchildren: Adam Crayton, Zach Murphy and Makenna Murphy. He will be missed dearly by his family. No services are planned. There will be a private "Celebration of Life" for family and close friends. |

Alice May Owings, a 60-year resident of Redondo Beach, passed away on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 in Redondo Beach, at the age of 91. She was born in Ellington, CT on January 14, 1919. She moved to Manhattan Beach in the 30s and worked in the insurance industry and later worked at D&B Appliances in Manhattan Beach for over 20 years. She married Ken Owings in 1950, helped raise his daughter, Patty and went on to have two children. Alice is survived by her daughter, Judy Susoeff of Redondo Beach; six grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She is predeceased by her husband, Ken E. Owings and their son, Roddy Owings. Anna Jane Spitz Mar. 31, 1919- Sept. 22, 2010 Anna Jane Spitz passed away at home, Sept. 22, 2010, at the age of 91. She was surrounded by the love and devotion of her family, both near and far. She was 91 years old, and preceded in death by the one-true-love of her life, Henry Spitz, her husband of 44 years, in 1987. Anna was an Ohio native, one of 7 children born to Yugoslavian immigrants. She was pre-deceased by all but her youngest brother, Dan. Anna will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her, but by none more than her four children; Suzanne, Gary (Cherl), Ron (Stephen) and Rudy (Tina) as well as eleven adoring grandchildren, dear nephews, nieces, grand-nephews, grand-nieces and one god-daughter. In 1946, Anna and her beloved Henry moved to Oakland from Ohio, in pursuit of their dream of owning their own jewelry store. Thus, the birth of Spitz Jewelers and a partnership of love, support and hard work which would lay the foundation for the success that business enjoys today. In addition to being the life of every party, Anna gave generously of herself to all manner of charitable causes and was a valued and active member of many groups and organizations until her passing. Foremost were The, of East Oakland, of which she was Past-President and Paul Harris Fellow, the Wheelchair Foundation, numerous AIDS charities, The Blackhawk Guild and many associated groups. She was, however, perhaps most memorable for her appearances as one of Pats' Prancers. The memorial service and celebration of a life exceptionally well lived will be held Sunday, Oct. 3, 2010 at one o'clock in the afternoon at The Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland, California, The celebration continues at the home of Cherl and Gary Spitz immediately following the service. STIENSTRA, BARBARA February 15, 1946 to June 7, 2010 Barbara (Recchia) Stienstra, 64, of Mesa, AZ, passed away Monday, June 7, 2010 at her residence. She was born February 15, 1946 in Boston, MA. Barbara spent many years self-employed as well as an employee in the healthcare field. In the late '70's, early '80's she worked on a fishing boat in Alaska. Barbara's passion and love was cooking, baking and most of all preparing gourmet meals for her family and friends. She enjoyed the arts and traveling and shared many stories about her trips to England, France, Italy and Ireland. She was the rare person who actually got it. Her sharp sense of humor and quick wit were her signature. She never dwelled on the negative and always strived to be better than the day before. She was a gracious host to her guests and she regaled them with numerous stories of growing up in an extended Italian family. She was truly a beautiful person. She left us entirely too early. Betty Maxine Rouse, 85, of Paso Robles passed away Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010. She was born in London, Ark., and came to Paso Robles in 1969 - her home ever since. Betty enjoyed cooking, sewing, canning and assisting her family gather fruits and vegetables for the farmers market. She became a nanny at a young age when the need presented itself to the family and she cared for younger family members. She loved to go to yard sales with family in search for treasures. She always had a camera ready to capture the moment. If you visited her at home, you were sure to leave with a full belly as she always had a warm meal and iced tea ready for you. She loved her family and was an absolute "sucker" for nieces, nephews, and kids in general. She worked for several large trucking firms as HRD manager and billing representative. Her mother, Mary Lamb of Merced, preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband of 20 years, Rex Tate; her father, Leo Lamb of Merced; her stepson Chris and his wife of Washington; stepdaughter Denise of Redding; sisters Tina Burnett of Huron, South Dakota and Evonne Parrino of Merced; brothers Mark, Christian, and Loren of Merced; her aunts, T.J. Fleming of Merced, Naomi Souza of Modesto and Ruth White of San Diego. Beloved Mother, Ganny, and Nannie passed away Sunday, September 19, 2010. She went to the beautiful gardens of heaven where she can now rest peacefully. She was very brave, fighting cancer for the past 1 1/2 years. Her grandson, Frederick William Parker "Bubba" and great grandson Dustin Randall Hoffman were already waiting for her in heaven. She is survived by her four daughters: Robin Rhoton and husband Eddie of Jacksonville, NC; June Hamilton and husband Kevin of Texarkana, AR; Ann Tussey and husband Dennis of Santa Rosa, CA and Joann Hunt and husband James of Hope, AR. She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Lisa, Timothy, Kristi, Paul, Summer, Megan, Jessica, and Brandon; and four great-grandchildren: Tara, Rebecca, Madison, and Austin. Mama loved to go pier fishing in North Carolina with her "fishing buddy" Eddie. Actually, she liked to fish just about anywhere as long as there were no snakes. In addition, she just loved working outside in her rose and vegetable gardens. She also loved helping Dennis in the vineyard. She loved to laugh and make you smile. She loved animals...all animals. She was just a very special lady in so many ways, but what she loved most were "her girls", as she referred to them and her family. If you knew her, I'm sure she touched your heart in some way. To quote one of her dear friends, "you take a lot of love with you but you leave a lot of love behind." So, precious Mama, we will forever hold you in our hearts and miss you very much. Cass was one of my favorite brothers. He was my inspiration to start singing. He made me laugh occasionally and he had the best sprit anyone could ever have. I remember how he wouldn't eat meat and could never hurt a fly. He was always as skinny as me, surprisingly, and he always would have a joke or a story to tell. Cass spoke his thoughts through his songs which I used to love to hear, he loved me and everyone. He even sang to the homeless. He made me so much more than I am. I still am so sad that he is gone, but I remember he once told me if he ever died not to cry, but to have a good time, because he wanted everyone to remember him with happy thoughts. I will miss him and his soul being with me. But I know he is stuck in my heart and in my memories even if he doesn't want to be there, he is. CLEO DENNEY MAR 6 1917 - SEPT 14 2010 Cleo Denney was born March 6, 1917 in Lindsey, Oklahoma to Bertie Alexandria Blankenship and James William Johnson and passed away on Tuesday, September 14, 2010 in Modesto, Ca. at the age of 93 years, 6 months and 8 days. She graduated East View High School near Willow, Oklahoma and had been a Care Giver and Councilor at Christian Homes of Abilene, Texas for 20 years before her retirement at 73 years. Her love and devotion to the Children in her care inspired the naming of their new home, "The Denney House" in her honor. She attended Davis Park Church of Christ since moving to Modesto in 1995. She was a devoted and active member of the Church of Christ all of her adult life and was an inspiration in Christianity to all who knew her. She was faithful in attendance as long as her health permitted. Preceding her in death were her Parents, her Beloved Husband, Woodrow Denney in 1970, four Brothers; Buck Johnson, Westly Johnson, Vanoy Johnson and Bill Johnson, and two Sisters, Margaret Ann Patrick and Alta Franks. Survivors include a Son, Darrell Joe Denney of Altus, Oklahoma; a Daughter, Cyndi Lindsey of Modesto, California, two Sisters, Elda Loy Avery of Chico, California, and Bonnie Ruth Berry of Olustee Oklahoma; six Grandchildren, five Great Grandchildren and many Nieces and Nephews. Cleo Denney was a beloved Daughter, Sister, Parent, Grandparent and Friend. Her gentle and loving spirit will be deeply missed but her life lessons will live on in all of our hearts. Davis, Daniel Delson March 2, 1931 - September 24, 2010 Daniel Delson Davis, Jr. was born on March 2, 1931 in Springfield, Massachusetts. He passed away on September 24, 2010 in Inglewood, California. Dan graduated from Lincoln University in 1952 with a degree in Biology. While at Tuskegee he met and married Mildred Portia Sharp. He graduated from Tuskegee Institute School of Veterinary Medicine in 1956. He began his professional practice in Providence, RI, with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.He and Portia moved to Los Angeles in 1958 where he initially worked for the State of California. He operated Slauson Avenue Animal Hospital until his retirement in 2005. They initially lived in the San Fernando Valley and later moved to Inglewood He is predeceased by his parents Bishop Daniel Delson Davis, Sr. and his mother Evelyn Davis. He is survived by his wife of 53 years Mildred P. Davis, step daughters Gretchen and Natalie, son Daniel daughters Saundra and Joan He is survived by six grandchildren. SPILOS, Daphne Molly Thompson Feb. 13, 1920 - Sept. 27, 2010 Beloved mother, grandmother, wife and friend was born in Riner, Montgomery County, VA to Abraham Wade and Clydia Wilmoth Dickerson Thompson. Her husband of 45 years, Peter Thomas Spilos passed away January 1, 1983. She was the youngest of nine brothers and sisters and was predeceased by Lucy Wade, Marvin Herman, Nellie Estelle Thompson Trump, Esther Irene Thompson Bugg, Captain Stillman Thompson, Edith Opal Thompson Graybill, Evia Wilmoth Thompson Lucas, and Leslie Deward Thompson. She is survived by her sister Vera Pearl Thompson Turner, and her two children Kasia Spilos Johnson (Gary), and Peter Thomas Spilos, Jr; two grandsons, Gregory (Jennifer) and Glenn (Kirsten) Johnson, and three great-grandsons, Graham, Grant, and Charles Johnson. Her childhood was spent in the farming community of Floyd, Virginia where she was raised by her Aunt Minnie Dickerson. Her family came to Floyd County in the 1700's, and she counts as her relatives many who were in the Revolutionary and the Civil Wars. Her love of nature and animals stems from her early years, and in life she was greatly admired for her integrity and grace. She has been a 30 year member of the San Marino Community Church, and was a docent in the gardens of the Huntington Library. She enjoyed her work as a trust officer at Crocker Bank and at Coast Savings and Loan. The family wishes to express their appreciation to Carla and Victoria of Vitas Hospice. David Charles Mink, Resident of, Lake Havasu City, Arizona, David Mink died of cancer in Lake Havasu City, Arizona on September 26, 2010., Dave was born in Burlingame, California on April 28, 1954. He spent his childhood in Burlingame and graduated from Mills High School. He earned a degree in forestry, graduating with honors from UC Berkeley's College of Agriculture. Dave worked for the Bureau of Land Management in Northern California. In Arizona, Dave helped build a Colorado River diversionary tunnel to provide water for Phoenix., Dave made his home in Parker, Arizona where his handiwork can be seen throughout the town. He planted trees to provide shade from the desert heat, and could build or fix just about anything. Dave was a voracious reader with a sharp wit and sense of humor. Sviland, Donald Alfred April 21, 1928 - September 26, 2010 After 82 years Don left us peacefully in the home of his son's family to begin eternal life with our holy Lord. He was battling cancer as well as the loss two months earlier of his long-time companion Joan Petrone. Don was born in Escanaba, Michigan. After serving in the Korean War he received a degree from the University of WIsconsin at Madison where he met Mary Anne Petrich. They married and moved to southern California where they started a family. He had a fulfilling career as an aerospace engineer. After a divorce he again found love with Joan. Don loved golf and the simple things in life. He remained a devout Roman Catholic. Before his passing he received the last rites. Don is survived by his daughter Laura Sviland, his son Gregory Sviland, and his granddaughter Keanna Sviland. A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. this Saturday October 2nd at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Laguna Woods. He will be buried near his parents and sister in Escanaba, Michigan. |

Fr. Donald J. Duggan, S.J., Resident of Los Gatos, Fr. Donald Joseph Duggan, 86, died September 27, 2010 in Regis Infirmary, Sacred Heart Jesuit Center, Los Gatos. He was a Jesuit for 68 years and a priest for 55 years., He was librarian at Sacred Heart Novitiate, Los Gatos, 1958-1962. In 1962 he was named Assistant Librarian at Santa Clara University, a post he held until 1980. After retiring from the university library, he was librarian of the Jesuit Community at SCU and did spiritual direction and retreats., In 1994 at the Vi¤a de Lestonnac Ministry Center in Temecula, he served as chaplain to the sisters, gave spiritual direction and guided individually directed retreats. It proved to be a "great occasion of grace and growth for me," he noted, adding, "I've never been happier." Declining health brought him to Sacred Heart Jesuit Center. "Fraternal charity is one of his biggest assets," said a friend, who noted that Don would graciously "take on any thankless and difficult apostolic role." May he rest in peace., Father Duggan's funeral Mass will take place at Sacred Heart Jesuit Center in Los Gatos on Saturday, Oct. 2, at 10am. Donald Thomas "Don" Terry, Resident of Roseville, CA, 77, passed away on September 26, 2010. He was born on August 12, 1933 in San Francisco, CA. He was married to Diane. Don graduated from Sequoia High School in 1951. He served as a Corporal in the Army, during which time he was stationed in Germany. His distinguished service led to his selection for Leadership School., Don and Diane were married on July 22, 1959. He then went through an apprenticeship in plumbing and spent many years in the industry as a superintendent. In 1974, Don founded Terry and Sons Plumbing, Inc., which he managed as a very successful business in the Menlo Park area until his retirement in the late 1990s. Don honorably served his trade as President of the Greater Bay Area Plumbing Association., He was very active outside of his profession, too. Don enjoyed restoring 1933 Ford automobiles, and was a longtime member of the Porsche Club. He was an avid runner for much of his life, completing the New York marathon and many 10-kilometer races. His enthusiasm for sports carried over to his loyal support for the San Francisco 49ers and the San Francisco Giants. He also had a special place in his heart for several Golden Retrievers he raised over the years., Don is remembered as being always quick with a smile, a joke, and a cheerful word. He was a devoted husband and father, loyal friend, and upstanding businessman. He was respected and admired by all who knew him., Don is survived by Diane, his loving wife of over 50 years, and also by his children Donald Claude Terry, Pamela Ann McNeill, and Kelly Jolene Watkins. His first son, Michael John Terry, preceded him in death. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Michael and Jordan Terry, Melanie McNeill, and Kirsten and Michael Watkins, by his brother- and sister-in-law Johnny and Patti Anfibolo, and by his cousins Mike and John Coffey. ., A rosary and visitation will be held this Thursday at 5:00pm at Sneider and Sullivan, 977 S. Dora Navarro, 83, of Indio, Calif. passed away September 25, 2010 in Indio. She was born April 11, 1927 to Juan Salih and Teresa Gallardo in San Francisco, Calif. She married Jose Navarro on August 17, 1961 in Indio. Along with her sister she was a business owner for 58 years with Teresa's Café in Indio. Dora is survived by her daughters, Teresa Daniel (Carey), Olga Partain (Jim), and Juanita Hernandez; son, Juan Salas (Terry); sister, Salima Calderon; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Our mother was devoted to her children and grandchildren. She also raised a number of children during her lifetime that remained devoted to her throughout her life. She will be greatly missed by all of us who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jose Navarro. Dorothy Marguerite Sawyer passed away peacefully on September 25, 2010, a warm autumn day, at her daughter's home in Lafayette, California. She was 88 years old., Dorothy was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on September 4, 1922, to Gladys and Frederick Smardon., Dorothy ventured away from home to begin a glamorous career with the Australian Embassy in Washington, D.C. Dorothy met Otto (Tom) Harold Sawyer and moved to Vallejo, California, where they began the businesses of Sawyer-Young Auto Sales and Tom Sawyer Boat Sales. Dorothy attended Vallejo Junior College and graduated from Sonoma State University, earning her B.A. degree (cum laude) and teaching credential, and San Francisco State University, earning her master's degree in teaching English as a second language. Dorothy taught TEOFL at the Vallejo Adult School in addition to working for the U.S. government's Internal Revenue Service and the Drug Enforcement Administration, from where she retired at the age of 72., Dorothy lived with her son and daughter-in-law in the Hawaiian Islands for one delightful year, enjoying their company, the sand, surf and tropical breezes., Dorothy's loves were many, including the French language, opera, symphony and theater. She had a passion for working in her garden, where she would toil for hours on end, annually producing a bounty of vegetables. Dorothy was devoted to her family as they were to her. She will be remembered for her enthusiastic approach to life, her incredible sense of style, the inspiration that she gave to the many who knew her and for her beautiful smile., Dorothy was pre-deceased by her beloved husband, Tom Sawyer; her parents, Gladys and Frederick Smardon; her sister, Alvah, and her brothers, Fred, Walter, Gordon, Roy, Wesley and Byron. She is survived by her loving family; son, Roger (Patricia) Sawyer of Vallejo; daughter, Sandra (Fred) Pazos of Lafayette; grandchildren, Joshua Sawyer, Gillian (Charletto) Valenzuela , Latisha (Eddie) Duran, Rich, Adam, Kyle and Marina; 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Dr. Barry H. Baum D.D.S., died September 29, 2010 after a valiant battle with pancreatic cancer. Born June 29, 1942 in Patterson, NJ. Graduated from Temple University School of Dentistry in 1969. After serving in the United States Air Force, Dr. Baum moved to Santa Rosa, CA with his wife LuAnn in 1972. He opened a dental practice in 1973 where he was loved and respected by his loyal patients. After his retirement from dentistry in 2002, he turned his energy to his own real estate business while also tending to his lifetime love of antique cars and his California-born love of wine and beer making. His enthusiasm for business, fishing, skiing, Santa Rosa, the island of Molokai, travel, and reading attracted devoted friends whom he cherished. His family and his Jewish faith and heritage were paramount throughout his life. Preceded in death by his brother Henry, Dr. Baum is survived by LuAnn; brother Richard, sister-in-law Barbara; sons Joshua and Taylor, daughter Allison, son-in-law Michael; and grandchildren Alyssa, Kyrah, and Ezra. Dr. Teddy Roosevelt Fredericks, 83, long time physician in Palm Desert, Indian Wells and Rancho Mirage area, passed away Saturday, September 18, 2010 in Thomasville, Ga. from complications following surgery. A memorial service will be held Friday, October 1, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Hope Lutheran Church on Portola Drive in Palm Desert. Family and friends are welcome to attend. Teddy Fredericks was born May 17, 1927, the first of four boys in Buffalo Center, Iowa to Lois and Ted Fredericks. His family owned and operated a small grocery store there. After only one year of undergraduate work at Iowa City University, he enlisted in the Navy and was stationed in San Diego, Calif. in 1946. Finishing his undergraduate degree he married Dolores Honsey of Lake Mills, Iowa in 1949. After starting medical school in Des Monies, Iowa their daughter, Deborah, was born. Dr. Fredericks practiced as a general practitioner in Thompson, Iowa for four years and had a son, Craig while living there. His love for California drew him there where he resided and practiced medicine in Barstow, Calif. for 20 years and was a member of Apple Valley Country Club. Eventually, Teddy and Dolores moved to Indian Wells practicing medicine in the desert until his death, September 18, 2010. Teddy's passion for the game of golf has been transmitted to his children and grandchildren. He was a member of many country clubs in the desert, Thunderbird, Indian Wells, PGA West, and Sunrise. Teddy and Dolores enjoyed a home in the desert and a beach condo in Coronado. Dr. Fredericks is survived by his wife, Dolores Fredericks; his children, Deborah Hazelton; son-in-law, Michael Hazelton and Dr. Craig Fredericks. His grandchildren were the joy of his life, Ryan Hazelton and wife, Crystal Hazelton, Jennifer Hazelton and her fiancé, Vlad Gordievsky and Haleigh Fredericks as well as his great-granddaughter, Abigail Louise Hazelton. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Gene, Ronnie, and Jack Fredericks. Teddy Fredericks was a devoted husband, and a loving father and grandfather. Many patients and friends depended on his advice and consul. He will be missed and remembered for his dedication to his patients and family. She was raised in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, where she graduated from the Calgary General Hospital in 1943 as a registered nurse. Audrey worked as a Nursing Sister with the Canadian Army. She became a U.S. citizen in 1948 and lived in Los Angeles and Glendale before moving to Santa Maria in 1970 with her husband, Les, a retired Glendale Police Lieutenant. KRIEGER, ELAINE 1935 to 2010 Elaine passed away on Wednesday, August 25th, at the age of 75 from complications related to a stroke suffered on April 1st. Blessed with an artistic mother and politically influential father, Elaine brought her love of the arts, and ability to get things done, from Manhattan to San Diego in the early 70's. Upon her arrival, and with experience in TV Production including the Price Is Right, Elaine hit the ground running, immediately establishing herself as a key player in local productions including the Jerry Lewis telethon, American Cancer Society, and the COMBO fundraising events. In 1987, when the public schools started eliminating programs for the arts, her combined talents as show producer and fundraiser blended to make the impossible, possible. Elaine's deeply held belief that the arts are a gift for the young to discover, gave birth to the largest event of its kind in San Diego history. Former first lady Laura Bush, in a letter to Elaine, said, "There is no more important resource to this nation than our children, and I am delighted to send my warmest greeting to all the children and parents who are attending the forth annual KIDZARTZ FESTIVAL." KidzArtz would have an 11 year run drawing an estimated 50,000 children and their parents annually to Balboa Park for a two day celebration of music, dance and hands on experience led by notables from almost every creative endeavor imaginable including artisans both local and international. Gary Meads, (meadsdurket), creator of the Emmy winning KidzArtz TV campaign, said, "She was an incredibly sincere and dedicated person who never looked to make a buck off KidzArtz - something rare these days. She did it out of genuine passion." Her tiny physical presence was eclipsed by her high level of energy that prompted so many to ask, "Who is that woman...?" A wide eyed child wearing a paint splatterd apron, or with lips puffed up to a Tuba as big as they were, "That's Elaine Krieger!" Elaine's love of the arts was matched by her charitable contributions. Gifts in her honor are suggested for San Diego Hospice and Children's Hospital. Elaine will be buried next to her mother in New York and is survived by Kathrine Gregori, Ada Kopetz Korf. and the countless number of children whose lives may have been changed because of her. Edward Patrick Andrada, 59, of Lemoore, California passed away on Friday, September 24, 2010 in Lemoore following a brief but bravely fought battle with cancer., Ed was born in Artesia, California on April 4, 1951 to Edward and Frances Andrada. He graduated from Riverdale High School in 1969. From 1970 to 1974, Ed served in the, , stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. He married Christine Ann Bertao in Lemoore, California on July 16, 1971 at St. Peter's Catholic Church and celebrated 39 years of marriage. Ed was of Catholic faith. For 26 years Ed worked at NAS Lemoore in the supervisory department as a Transportation Specialist. Ed and Christine enjoyed coaching soccer when their son, Jason was small. He was a member of the Lemoore Trinity Association. Ed enjoyed going to the gym, going on cruises and loved working in his yard. ELEANOR ALICE SHUMAN APR 4, 1922 - SEPT 25, 2010 Eleanor passed away peacefully at 88 years of age in her apartment in Modesto, CA. Born in Hampden, Maine to George and Eva (Wales) Hawkins. She married Eleon Merton Shuman, Jr. on June28, 1942, relishing 59 years together. Eleanor enjoyed cooking, gardening, traveling, antiques, sewing and especially spending time with her family. She was an outstanding cook, using fruits and vegetables from her garden in meals. She liked to travel, something she didn't get the chance to do enough. She was especially fond of her trips to Hawaii and Germany; finding the castles of Germany quite fascinating and the music of Hawaii beautiful. She did some antique hunting on her trips to visit relatives in Maine. She also liked to sew when she could. She was of great support to her husband, as she was an astute financial manager for her husband's contracting business and their personal finances. She was a member of First Baptist Church for more than 40 years, participating in various ministries. She is survived by her children; David Shuman (Stephanie) of Germany, Jerry Shuman (Pat) of Modesto, Tami Eddings (Steve) of Virginia, 9 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Eugene Hill, 78, of Indio, Calif. passed away September 21, 2010 in Palm Desert, Calif. Eugene was born on November 30, 1931 in Henderson, Texas. He had two local sons who preceded him in death: Tommy Hill and Jessie Brown, both of Indio. He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife of 61 years, Henrietta Hill; and five local children, Arthur and Jerry Hill, Queen Langston, Clarice Thomas, all of Indio and Mary Hubbard of Colton, Calif. April 22, 1941 - Sept. 5, 2010, Faustin passed away peacefully in Petaluma, CA after a long illness. Born in Esquiüle, France, he was the son of Charles Mazéris and Marie Luro Mazéris. He was preceded in death by his brothers Jean-Pierre and Germain and his sister Jeannette. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne, his daughter Michèle, his son Daniel, and his grand-daughter Juno Sophia as well as his sisters Maryse Cogi and Madeleine (Michel) Macé and also nieces Martine, France, Pascale and Isabelle; and nephews Patrick and François. After immigrating to New York, he made his home in San Francisco, where he ran a downtown tavern with his business partner Bernard Mirandette. He was a member of the Basque Cultural Center. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the wonderful staff at the Oaks in Petaluma for the excellent and loving care Faustin received during his entire stay. Fleda passed away on Friday, April 9, 2010, after a long illness. She was born in Long Beach, CA, on January 26, 1924, the daughter of Ray and Vera Krone. Her childhood years were spent in Arcata, San Bruno, and Palo Alto, CA. She graduated from Palo Alto High School, and became one of the pioneers of the Palo Alto Children's Theater. She received her BA from Stanford University in Theater Arts and Costume Design. In 1950 she married William Evans, and on April 8, 2010, they celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary. A year ago Fleda and Bill moved to Loomis, CA, from Los Altos Hills, to be near their family., Fleda shared her love of the theater through teaching drama education at San Jose State University and directing plays for amateur theater groups in her home town of Los Altos, CA. She was an active member of PEO, a service organization which supports academic scholarships for women, and was for many years an active member of a religious theater group called LAMP (Los Altos Methodist Players), directing numerous productions there., Fleda is survived by her husband Bill, her daughter and son-in-law, Lee Evan and Jeff Belfiglio of Bellevue, WA; her son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Amanda Evans of Loomis, CA; grandchildren Evan and Alexander Belfiglio, Silas Brewton, and Carson Evans; her sister Betty Krone Asher of Loomis, and many nieces and nephews., A memorial service will be held at Shepherd of the Sierra Presbyterian Church in Loomis, CA on Saturday, May 1 at 4:30 PM. Frances was born in Patoka, Illinois Saturday, February 16, 1929 to Benjamin Franklin Jr. "Frank" & Carol Christine (Cox) Elifritz at the beginning of the Great Depression. In the first couple of years of Frances' life she and her mother lived for a time on the farm in Patoka with her mother's parents Charles and Agnes (Simcox) Cox while her father worked in St. Louis in a restaurant often visited by the St. Louis Cardinals. While living in Patoka Frances was loved and spoiled by her two Grandmothers, Agnes Cox and Lena (Brokelmeyer) Elifritz. For her father to maintain employment in the oil fields it was necessary for the family to leave Patoka. She lived in Norris City, IL for a time and later moved to Albion, IL where Frances finished High School. After High School she attended Business College in Evansville, Indiana. Returning to Albion she met her future husband Albert "Al" Hodgson. Al & Frances were married August 26, 1949 at the Edwards County Fair in Albion, IL. In 1952 they moved out to California where most of Al's family was currently living. For a short time they lived in Santa Rosa eventually ending up in the Eureka/ Arcata area of Humboldt County. In 1954 Frances experienced her first earthquake. After the birth of their first son, Mike, they decided to build a house on property given to them by Al's parents on the Hodgson Ranch in the Willow Creek area. About the time of the birth of their second son, Mark, they we're in the process of opening their new store Willow Creek Varity. Frances operated the store while Al worked as a millwright for Carolina Cal, a local plywood mill near Salyer. Around 1960 they moved the store across the street (Hwy 299) to a larger building. From that point forward Al & Frances operated the store full time together. The store was flooded with 4 to 6 inches of water and mud in the 1964/65 flood due to a creek overflowing its banks and the mountain behind the store siding down up against the back of the building. Life changed quickly for the young family as electrical power was out for weeks and the new home was entirely electric with the exception of a wood fireplace in the living room. The family lived in the living room until power was finally restored. Frances cooked all the family means in the fireplace using a cast iron Dutch oven. Shortly after the flood property was obtained on the west end of Willow Creek on the north side of Hwy 299. A new much larger building was built to accommodate the growth of the store. In the mid-eighties the building was remodeled and a new section added to enlarge the store to the building you see today now home to the Willow Creek Family Health Center. The store was renamed at the time of the remodeling to Hodgson's of Willow Creek and became a Ben Franklin franchise store allowing Al & Frances to carry an extended line of merchandise. The store was a big part of Frances' life. While she took pride in the entire store there were two departments that she enjoyed most, Women's Clothing and the Arts and Crafts. Frances and Ginger Burchard would travel out of the area on buying trips each year to purchase new lines of clothing for the store. Always attempting to find and purchase fashionable women's clothing. The store had many hard to find items and customers came from all around the Klamath-Trinity Valley Area to shop. Many customers came from the coast often times commenting that the store carried merchandise that was hard to find elsewhere. Over the years there were many wonderfully talented and loyal employees two of which were Virginia North and Ginger Burchard. Virginia and Ginger worked for Al & Frances for many years and stayed with them right up till the end when the store was closed at the end of the year in 1995. Another big part of Frances' life was her church. She was a member of the Willow Creek Bible Church and was involved in many church related activities such as Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and Christian Women's Club. Frances often times would pickup or make arranges for kids to come to Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. In the days since Frances' passing the family has heard many wonderful stories of how Frances touched their lives. Frances was also involved in Soroptimist International and the Willow Creek Fire Bells. She was one of the original organizers of the annual Bigfoot Daze celebration and generally active in her community. Frances is survived by her husband of 61 years Albert Eugene Hodgson, her son, Michael Hodgson and his wife Susan of Saratoga and their two children Nickisa and Kevin. She is also survived by her son Mark Hodgson of McKinleyville, her brother's children Patrick Elifritz of Bokoshe, OK; Cathy Warren of Red Bluff, CA and her children Phillip, Michael, Kelly and Cameron; Kelly Marshall and her husband Carson of Oklahoma City, OK and daughters Tina and Amber and their son Carson III; and John Elifritz of Fulton MO. Frances loved Mike's wife Susan as the daughter she never had. She very much loved her granddaughter Nickisa and her grandson Kevin. All of them had a very special place in her heart. Frances' brother Jim died at the early age of 37 from complications related to an accident on an oil rig several years earlier. This death left 4 young children without a father who needed their daddy very much. While Frances couldn't replace their Father she showed them love and devotion and tried to be part of their lives whenever possible. She loved each and every one of them and their children as well who were more like Frances' grandchildren than nesses and nephews. Frances was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her parents Frank & Christine Elifritz; her sister Thea Mae Elifritz who only lived 16 days and her brother James Phillip "Jim" Elifritz. Gail Newton Gail Newton, loving wife of Jerry and mother to Sandy, Rachael and Chrissy, passed away with family and friends by her side on September 28, 2010. Her daughter Cheri preceded Gail in death in 2002. Born in 1950, in Cleveland, Ohio, Gail moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1980, where she met and married Jerry Newton. They moved to Lompoc in 2000, where Gail worked for several car dealerships. She was a prized employee and salesperson. In addition to her own four children, Gail had two stepchildren, Kristi and Brian, 12 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren, all of whom will miss her dearly. She also leaves six brothers and sisters, along with many nieces and nephews. Everyone who met her loved Gail, and her kindnesses will be remembered forever. It has often been said, "beauty is only skin deep." With Gail, her beauty was both observed and felt by so many. George (Mickey), Mason, 8/25/1928 - 9/18/2010, George (Mickey) Mason passed away in Lincoln, California surrounded by his loving family at his bedside on Saturday September 18, 2010 at the age of 82., Born in Chico, California on August 25, 1928 to John Thomas and Gladys Mason, he was a 77 year resident of Auburn., He attended Edgewood School, a one room school, grades 1-8 located on Mt. Vernon Road in the Edgewood district of Auburn. He also attended Lincoln Way, Alta Vista grade school and Placer High School., After graduation from Placer he joined the US Air Force and was stationed in France and Germany as a radar instructor and discharged after 4 years of service. In 1950 he was recalled to service during the, for one more year., He worked at Safeway in Auburn for 33 years retiring in 1988. He also served on the Executive Board for United Food Workers of Northern California for 12 years. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Auburn and Auburn, He was preceded in death by his brother Jack Mason and sister Dorothy Nicholas. He is survived by his loving wife Mary Mason of 61 years, children Melanie and Brad of Loomis, Michelle and Bob Skiles of Marysville, Michael and Valerie Mason of Roseville. He is a grandfather to Mitchell, Mason, Somer, Tiffany, and Gabriel. Mickey also has one great grandchild, Drake. A prince of a man passed away on September 19, 2010 in Rancho Mirage, Calif. He is survived by the love of his life, his "true love", Doris Nadler Mechanick, his wife for 53 years. His adoring children, Lisa, Philip, and Carol Mechanick survive him. He was also the proud and loving grandfather of Jason, Emanuel and great-granddaughter, Lily. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Tibby Mechanick; and his brothers, Alan and Ted Mechanick. Jerry will be missed by his nephews, nieces, sister-in-laws, Godchildren and many cousins and friends who loved him dearly. He will be remembered as always being there to help, fix or drive anywhere and anytime. Jerry loved learning. He was a voracious reader. Born in Bayonne, N.J. on May 25, 1932, he graduated from Bayonne High School, Columbia University and Rutgers University. He completed his master's degree in Environmental Science at Dominguez Hills in California. Jerry and Doris raised their three young children in Teaneck, N.J., where he began his first career in retail, owning "World of Wood." He was a founding member of Kiwanis, a Mason, Cub Scout leader and had a season ticket to the "Met." In 1971, he closed his business, and started his second career with the U.S. Government, in Port Hueneme, Calif. He suprised his family by buying a house in the Ventura Keys. He was president of his temple, Beth Torah, youth group leader and home work helper to all who needed help. Jerry and Doris helped expand Jewish Marriage Encounter, and he loved leading weekends. Jerry enjoyed travel, especially planning a six-week European train adventure for the 25th anniversary. Most remembered are family camping trips in the VW van. When the children were in college, the Mechanick's moved to Santa Barbara. Jerry loved walking on the beach, climbing the rocks and listening to opera at the Music Academy of the West. In 1991, he started his third career with the Coachella Valley Association of Government, (C.V.A.G.). Jerry was the first "PM 10 Coordinator" and won many awards for C.V.A.G. He loved the desert and explored it thoroughly. He planned his most exciting trip after retirement when he mapped out a cross-country adventure to visit most of the presidential libraries. Jerry's love of travel included cruising, and moving from house to house, and doing most of the renovations himself, with help from his family. He leaves us cherished memories. We will always miss him, especially his smile. Burial took place at the United Hebrew Cemetery, in Staten Island, N.Y. on September 21, 2010. A memorial for Jerry will be held at 3:00 PM on October 17, 2010 at Atria Hacienda at 44600 Monterey Ave., Palm Desert, CA. Harold P. Silva Passed away September 21, 2010 at the age of 81. Former husband of Marion Silva; father of Mike(Diana) Silva, Jack Silva, Matt(June) Silva and Judy(Todd) Thompson; grandfather of Lisa, Kyle and Kevin Silva, Joe Silva, Daniel, Katie Marie and Gregory Silva, and Brian and Kristen Petersen; son of the late Verne and Margaret Silva; brother of Maryann Martinez, and preceded in death by his brother Ben Silva and his sister Dorothy Quistgard; he is also survived by many nieces, nephews and grand nieces and grand nephews. Harold was born and raised in San Francisco. He graduated from Mission High School. He served in the US Army and the Coast Guard from 1946-1952 as a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne Division, and as a Merchant Seaman. Harold retired after 30 years as building operations control center manager at Pacific Bell in 1985. Harry J. Ramey of Danbury, passed away at his home on September 29, 2010 with his wife of 64 years, Frances, at his side. Harry was born on November 4, 1922 in Lawrence, Mass., a son of the late Kater and Sultana (Hassey) Ramey. He graduated from Danbury High School in 1940 and was a veteran of, having served with the 112th AAA Battalion in Northern Africa and Southern France from 1943 to 1946. His unit was awarded the Croix de Guerre. During World War II, the seven sons of the Ramey family all served their country during the conflict. Prior to his retirement, Harry worked for the Southern New England Telephone Company for 35 years and was a past Trustee of St. Anthony's Maronite Catholic Church. He became an avid golfer in retirement and was able to share his love for the game with his children and grandchildren for many years. Harry was also a member of the Richter Park Senior Golf Club. Harry was predeceased by his brothers, Mitchell, Joseph, Phillip, Henry and sisters, Mabel Haddad and Lavina Tomer. He leaves behind his devoted wife Frances (Donise) Ramey; two sons, Dennis and Wayne; daughters-in-law, Michelle and Joanne; grandchildren, Darryl, Christopher, Michael and Stephen; brothers, Namen N. Ramey and Namen J. Ramey; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A very special thank you to Drs. Ira Galin, John Pezzimenti, Michael Cohenuram (and all their staff) and daughter-in-law, Joanne not only for their healing powers, but also for their friendship and support to Harry over the past years. ISAACSON JANICE October 27, 1945 September 25, 2010 Janice Beverly Isaacson passed away peacefully with her family at her side Saturday, September 25, after a courageous battle against cancer. She was born Janice Erdelyan on October 27, 1945 in Oak Park, IL, to Steven and Dolores Erdelyan. The family settled in Glen Ellyn, IL, where Janice went to grade school and high school. There she met her future husband, James Isaacson. Janice attended Bowling Green State University, where she received a degree in art education. She became Mrs. James Isaacson on August 10, 1968. She taught junior high school art while Jim attended dental school at the University of Illinois. Upon graduation, Jim entered the Navy Dental Corps in San Diego. In 1974, Janice gave birth to her first child, Jason Steven Isaacson. In 1981, she gave birth to her second child, Ryan Harold Isaacson. Janice and Jim raised their family in Escondido, CA, and watched with pride as their sons grew. Janice was a caring, tender, and selfless mother who devoted her entire life to husband and family. Janice always wanted to live by the ocean. In 2000, Janice and Jim sent their youngest off to college, and moved to a home in Cardiff by the Sea. There, alone again after 25 years of raising children, they spent a decade in warm reflection on the memories they had made together. In November 2009, she was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive tumor. With a warrior's courage, she endured months of surgeries, weeks in the hospital, chemotherapy and radiation. Though she fought until the end, life was taken from her on September 25th. She is survived by her husband Jim, sons Jason and Ryan, mother Dolores, sister Susan, daughter-in-law Anya, granddaughter Lilian, nieces Heidi, Sharon, Rebekah, Debbie, and Katie, and nephews Matthew, Geoffrey, and John. In her final days, as her body grew weaker, her spirit was strengthened by the sight of her granddaughter and the love that poured out on her from her family and friends. Jack N. Donato, a longtime resident of San Pedro died Tuesday, September 28, 2010. Jack died peacefully at his home at the age of 74. He was born May 28, 1936 in Brooklyn, New York, son of Giovan and Milan Donato. Jack and his family moved to San Pedro at an early age, where he attended Cabrillo Elementary School, Dana Middle School and graduated from San Pedro High School. He became a commercial fisherman, owner of The Karen D and My Way boats, worked at McCowan's Market (1st Street Store), founded The Crab Pot in Carson, CA., later establishing the Crusty Crab in Ports O' Call Village, and finally retiring in 1992. Jack was preceded in death by brother, Frank Donato; sister, Rose Helms and daughter, Giovanna Machi Poole. Jaclyn Marie Bisceglie, age 19 of Norwalk and former Redding resident, died Wednes-day, September 29 at Yale-New Haven Hospital after a serious short illness. Jaclyn was born in Norwalk December 8, 1990, the daughter of Rosemarie Saracco Bisceglie and Gerard F. Bisceglie. She attended Redding schools, later moved to Norwalk, graduating from Norwalk High School in 2009. She had a passion for cheerlead-ing. She worked with her Dad at the Montessori School in Wilton as an assistant running coach. Jaclyn also loved animals and was soon to begin work as a veterinary technician. June 14, 1917 - Sept. 23, 2010 Our hero, our father, James Milton Bird, passed to Heaven, as dawn broke over Newport Beach, Calif. on Thursday September 23, 2010. Dad, in a peaceful sleep, was embraced with tenderness as we said farewell, expressing our gratitude for his love, faithfulness, integrity, intelligence and sense of humor. Our mother, Winolee Bird, stood bravely with us as she said goodbye to her husband for the last time. Born in Wenatchee, Wash. to Leroy and Nellie Bird on Flag Day, June 14, 1917, He graduated from Washington State University with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering. Dad played basketball for the Cougars and was a member of Sigma Kai Fraternity. In 1943 dad contracted a mysterious virus and was admitted into the hospital where he was assigned a beautiful student nurse, Winolee Sauer, later to become his soul mate, the love of his life. The comedian he was, dad always liked to say, "Mom got me while I was flat on my back, defenseless". They were married on July 16, 1944 and celebrated sixty six wonderful years together this past July. Dad's first job after college was with Boeing in Seattle. James (Jim) Peter Christakes, 58, of Cathedral City passed away September 4, 2010 in Palm Springs Calif. Jim was born August 9, 1952 in San Francisco to Chris and Dorothy Christakes. Jim graduated in 1972 with a degree in Culinary and Hotel Management. In 1985 Jim and his partner David Milne co-owned the Christakes family business, the St. Francis Fountain Creamery in San Francisco. In 2000 Jim moved to Cathedral City and was working at the Spa Resort Casino. Jim loved to cook, and had a wonderful eye for decorating. He will be dearly missed. Janice Ewing Hollowell, born June 12th, 1949, passed away at her home in Shingletown on Sunday, September 26th, 2010 from complications of myelodysplastic syndrome. Jan graduated from Red Bluff Union High School in 1967 and attended California State University at Chico, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1972. She spent her life dedicated to helping others. Jan began her career in Monterey Pacific Grove working with children with severe speech disabilities. During her long career, Jan also helped countless stroke and accident victims regain the ability to swallow and speak again. She was passionate about language skills and was a regular contributor to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation. Jan loved being an active member of her community. She was a past chaplain with the West Coast Ladies Auxiliary Fleet Reserve Association and was also secretary for the Shingletown Lion's Club. Jan was chairwoman for the Hearing and Speech Action and Work with Hearing Impaired committee for LCI District 4-C1 as well. Jasbir was an amazing individual who encountered many obstacles and challenges through life, but was always able to overcome them and remain strong. After his father passed, Jasbir was able to fill his shoes and become the foundation of his family. He was a caring husband to Rajinder Kaur Bains and loving father to Damandeep, Tejwant and Pavandeep. He was adored by his sisters Jasbir Mander and Sukhbinder Gill. Jeanne (Seri) Ferrauiolo, age 82 of Danbury, wife of Frank J. Ferrauiolo, died on Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at Danbury Hospital. Mrs. Ferrauiolo was born in Danbury November 10, 1927, a daughter of the late Cesare and Rose (Ross) Seri. She attended local schools and was a retired payroll clerk having been employed with the Barden Corporation. Mrs. Ferrauiolo retired in 1993. A lifelong Danbury resident, she was a member of A.A.R.P.-Chapter 1067 (C.W.V.) of Danbury and St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Danbury. She enjoyed knitting, puzzles and trips to the Mohegan Sun Casino. In early years, Mrs. Ferrauiolo was an avid bowler. In addition to her husband, Frank of 40 years, she is survived by a daughter, Lisa J. Lynch and her husband, Sean of Danbury; two brothers, Michael Seri and his wife, Patricia and Joseph Seri, both of Danbury; two sisters, Florence Klezovich and her husband, Joseph of Seymour and Theresa Carlo of Danbury; two grandchildren, Brian Lynch and Rose Lynch; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Ferrauiolo was prede-ceased by a sister, Mary Stavola and two brothers, Anthony Seri and John Seri. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, October 27, 2010 at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Danbury. Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery. JoAnn (Setaro) Hodgman, age 63 of New Milford, died at Danbury Hospital on Wednesday, September 29th. She was born in Danbury on April 13, 1947, daughter of the late Joseph Setaro and Frances (Pascuzzi) Gallo. She was a graduate of Danbury High School, class of 1965. She was the original owner of the Iron Butterfly Hair Salon in Danbury. JoAnn was a devout parishioner of St. Peter Church in Danbury and also enjoyed membership in their Ladies Guild. She was happiest when spending time with her cherished nephew, Noah. She will be sadly missed by her brother, Pat Gallo of Ohio; her sister, Barbara Gallo of Danbury; her nephew, Noah Matthew Gallo; her aunt, Lois Generali and her husband, Dom of Danbury; as well as many cousins and special friends. Joe Morello On September 3, 2010 Joe Morello passed from this life surrounded by his family. Having enjoyed 80 years of family, business, sports, and golf, Joe succumbed after a hard-fought battle with multiple myeloma. A gentleman, a man of integrity, honesty, kindness, and generosity, Joe is survived by the family of which he was so proud - his wife (Augie) of 58 years, his children and their spouses (Linda Morello and Javier Gomez, John and Heather Morello, Joe Morello and Trish Breslin), 4 grandchildren (Catherine, Hannah, Matteo, and Anna Morello), cousins and family, and his beloved dog, Tuffy. Joe, son of Maria and John Morello of Mill Valley, lived 77 years of his life in Marin County. He graduated from Park School and Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley, and he earned an AA from the College of Marin. A great athlete, Joe was co-captain of his schools' baseball teams and a member of the Jr. Seals. He was a co-founder of the Southern Marin Little League and he coached numerous Little League and C.Y.O. basketball teams. A dedicated fan of the 49ers (season ticket holder) and the Giants, Joe enjoyed both playing and watching sports. The day after Joe married Augie, IJ columnist Jim Gilmartin wrote "Tiburon third sacker Joe Morello didn't show up for his team's game yesterday. Joe was too busy - getting married. The new auxiliary third sacker is the former Augie Perry." And, Joe loved golf, playing several times every week and planning his calendar around his golf games. Joe's great passion was the business in which he co-partnered with the Canepa family - the Mill Valley Market. Both Jim and Bob Canepa were respected and beloved business partners and friends with whom he shared 35 years in business. As the produce buyer at the Mill Valley Market, Joe dedicated himself to bringing the freshest and best produce to his customers and in meeting their special wants and needs. He took pleasure in learning everything he could about fine foods and wines and sharing that with family, friends, and customers. No one could barbecue a steak or prepare a crab dip quite like Joe. At his 50th wedding anniversary, he remarked that he was "the luckiest man in the world" - he had had a business, a wife, and a family he loved. Joe was a member of numerous organizations (SIRS Branch 47, Italian Catholic Federation, Italian Athletic Club). He dedicated his time to his children's schools and to his parish. He enjoyed many friendships - other gentlemen who shared his love of sports, enjoyed his company, and supported him during these past two years of declining health. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Joe and his family wish to express their gratitude to the staff of the Greenbrae Care Center for their extraordinary and compassionate care. And, Joe held his physicians (Dr. Robert Van Herick and Dr. Bobbie Head) in the highest esteem. He valued and respected their care and treatment. John Anthony Enos passed away Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010, in San Luis Obispo. He was born in Stockton, Calif., in April 1922, and a few months later, the family moved to Fresno, Calif., where he attended St. John''s Cathedral School and Theodore Roosevelt High School. During his senior year, he became Company commander of the school''s High School Cadet Corps. He graduated in June 1939 and enlisted in the, in June 1940. He had attained the rank of Corporal when, started, and he rapidly rose through the ranks and became a First Sergeant in January 1943. In 1944, while serving at Aircraft, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific headquarters in Hawaii, he was promoted to Sergeant Major. At the end of the War, he was assigned as a Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of the Marine Corps Separation Center at Miramar, Calif. In July 1946, he left the Marine Corps and returned to Fresno, where he helped organize a Marine Corps Reserve unit. This unit was ordered to active duty in July 1950 to serve in the, . While serving with the First Marine Division Air Support Team in Korea in January 1952, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. After he returned to the states, he was assigned to the Naval Intelligence School at Washington D.C., and then to the Nuclear Weapons Operations Course in San Diego, Calif., and Yucca Flats, Nev., to observe the detonation of a 20-kiloton atom bomb. Further assignments were to the School of Military Justice at Newport, R.I., and duty at Atlantic Fleet Headquarters in Norfolk, Va. While attached to Fleet Headquarters at Norfolk, he was further assigned to Marine Squadrons based on aircraft carriers that served in the Mediterranean Sea from 1955 to 1956 and 1959 to 1960. He chose to retire from the Marines in June 1964 having attained the rank of Major. In November 1964, he was hired by San Luis Obispo County to work in the Veterans Service Office. Four years later, he was appointed by the Board of Supervisors to head that department. He retired from that position in December 1987. He was accredited by the State of California, Department of Veterans Affairs, American Legion and the, to represent veterans before the adjudication boards of the Veterans Administration. He was elected by county employees to serve as a Founding Trustee for the County''s retirement trust and was twice re-elected. John and his wife, Jayne, loved to travel in their motorhome and enjoyed recreational boating. John served in the Coast Guard Auxiliary for 15 years, until they sold their boat. They also enjoyed taking cruises and toured many places in the world. John was a life-time member of the Retired Officers Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and the Fleet Reserve Association, as well as a member of the Marine Corps Mustang Association, Marine Corps League and the 1st Marine Division Association and, No. 322. John was a past commander of American Legion Post No. 66 and past State President of the California Association of County Veterans Service Officers. John is survived by his wife, Jayne; son, John Michael Enos of Santa Ana, Calif.; daughters Catherine Huston of Atascadero, Susan West of Stockton, Calif., and Pamela Rothlisberger of San Luis Obispo; stepson, James D. Rhoades, Ph.D., of Riverside, Calif.; stepdaughter, Joan E. August 8, 1924-September 23, 2010 Joseph D. Lubell of Rancho Mirage, Calif., age 86, died on Thursday, September 23, 2010. He was born August 8, 1924 on the lower East Side of New York City to parents Sophie and David. Joe (as he was endearingly called) grew up in the Bronx, New York City and attended Public School 66, Herman Ridder Junior High School and James Monroe High School. At the age of sixteen, he had the choice of a scholarship to the College of the City of New York (CCNY) or a contract to play baseball with a farm club related to the New York Yankees. His parents directed him to college. World War II interrupted normal aspects of life, coping with growing up during a long-lasting depression, and at the age of eighteen he was assigned to The Army Air Force and left the confines of New York for basic training at Seymour Jonson Field in Goldsboro, N.C. GI Joe was assigned to the Yankee Division, a Massachusetts National Guard Group with an excellent combat history in World War I. After spending a great deal of time in army hospitals, he received a medical discharge with several military honors on August 24, 1945 and almost immediately enrolled at |
Born October 11, 1923, died peacefully at his home, Monday morning, September 27, 2010 of heart failure in Sebastopol where he lived with his wife Virginia, daughter Martha, and son in law Ralph Harmon. Joseph was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he was the only son in a family of eight children. Joseph served in the, Air Corps as a, pilot flying a B24 bomber in the European Theater. He continued his love of flying well into his later years in glider planes. Joseph spent the majority of his adult life in Chicago where he was a radio personality for over 50 years. Known as Jay Andres, he had his own show, Music Til Dawn also known as the Jay Andres Show, then Great Music from Chicago, where he had a loyal and adoring following. Judy Carolyn Russel McPartland, born March 18, 1952 to Lunolia and Jimmy Russel in White House, TN, died Sunday morning at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN, after a very long and courageous battle with a debilitating liver disease. Judy had been shuttled from her Laguna Niguel, CA home in August in a desperate attempt to obtain a much needed liver transplant. She handled the last many painful days of her battle with the utmost of dignity and the greatest of courage. Judy was an accomplished Radiation Therapy Technologist, trained in the profession at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, later working there treating cancer patients. Throughout her seemingly nomadic life as her family followed her husband's career moves around the U.S., Judy got to see much of the country and made many friends from coast to coast. She went on to compassionately serve many terminally ill cancer patients at Muskogee General Hospital in Muskogee, OK and Mission Hospital in Laguna Beach, CA. She was renowned for her expertise in the field and her kind and compassionate nature with her patients. Judy was a very intelligent, sweet and kind woman who loved to read and did so voraciously. She enjoyed swimming and loved to learn, dabbling in many various college level courses at her local Saddleback College in CA, and involving herself in many unique and interesting hobbies throughout her life. Most of all she loved to support her daughter's singing and academic efforts, traveling to Rome to see her sing for the Pope, and her son's love of music and interest in the motion picture industry, supporting his many musical endeavors over the years. She was the most wonderful mother, kind, caring, reflective and very supportive. Her children were her world and she will forever be remembered for her devotion to them! Judy is survived by her beloved children, daughter, Shane McPartland of Stockholm, Sweden and son, Jace McPartland of Laguna Niguel, CA, her former husband of 15 years and friend until the end, Harry McPartland, III, her trusted and loving sisters-in-law, Rebecca and Vicky Russel of Cross Plains, TN; brothers, Jimmy, Earl and Bruce Russel of Cross Plains, TN; and sisters, Janet Hosale and Denise McCullan of Hendersonville, TN. Judy's remains will be cremated; her ashes will be brought to her home in Laguna Niguel, CA and spread in the Pacific Ocean that she loved so much. Justin Paul Butler, 3/10/1994 - 9/20/2010, September 20, 2010 we lost our beloved son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend, Justin Paul Butler, born March 10, 1994. Words cannot describe the joy, and now the sorrow, that we have experienced in Justin's short life. Justin's friendship meant so much to so many people, and he was passionate in everything he did. Although his current passions were football and his football family, Justin loved the Lord and shared this love as he prayed for teammates on and off the field, and loved on his friends and those in need. We are so happy that Justin re-dedicated his life to the Lord one year ago at Hume Lake, with his brother Bryan at his side. KATHERINE JAHNS NEWTON August 7, 1917 ~ September 7, 2010 Died peacefully at her home in Riverside surrounded by family and friends. She was 93. Katherine, a lifetime resident of Perris Valley graduated from Perris High School in 1935 and attended San Bernardino City College. In 1937, she married Robert "Bob" Jahns, a long time valley farmer and rancher. Bob passed away in 1980. Katherine, the daughter of Teresa and Carlo Cena, grew up in Nuevo, California with her siblings, Liberty, Gene, Lawrence and Margaret. Kat, as she was called by most of her family and friends, lead a full and active life: from running an orange juice business with Bob, acting as "spotter" during the war, to owning a dress shop in Perris. At the age of 40, she began her professional career with the Riverside County Probation Department. She was eventually named Director of the Van Horn Youth Center, devoting countless hours to helping local youth at risk. After her retirement in 1982, she married Richard (Newt) Newton, spending many wonderful years with him until his death in 1996. She enjoyed Bunko parties, the Perris Valley Historical and Museum Association, as well as Perris High School gatherings and reunions. She was a long- time member of Canyon Crest Country Club, where she spent many birthdays and Easter brunches with her daughter, grandchildren, and three greatgrandchildren--though the youngest, Ellie, was always afraid of the guy in the bunny suit, an annual source of many laughs! Katherine is survived by her beloved brother, Lawrence Cena; daughter, Patti Proudfit (Richard); granddaughter, Mary Scott "Scotti" Strockis (Luke); grandson, Blake Proudfit (Joely) and three great-grandchildren, Mack Strockis 17, Ben Strockis 15, and Ellie Strockis 12. Rhodes, Lee March 21, 1929 - September 24, 2010 Lee passed away peacefully on September 24, 2010 in San Mateo California. He was 81. Born in Los Angeles, Lee graduated with a B.A. from UCLA in 1953. He worked for over 30 years in the pharmaceuticals industry. He loved to travel and collect antiques. He played guitar and sang country and western music. He was devoted to staying in great physical condition through swimming, karate and ice staking. Letha Maxine Stone, 90, passed away in Indio, California on September 27, 2010. She was born in Belton, Missouri, on May 9, 1920, the only child of Charles Paul and Esther Lucille Mosby. After her parents divorced, her mother married George M. Millhan and the family moved to Hollywood, California, where she attended Hollywood High School. Maxine met William Edward (Eddie) Podvolecky in Hollywood and they were married on June 11, 1937, at the Episcopal Church in Hollywood. Two daughters were born of the union. After Eddie's death, Maxine met and married Clifford E. Stone in Las Vegas, Nevada. They were married for 14 years and lived in Anaheim, California, until his death. In 1996, she moved to Palm Desert to live with her daughter. She moved to a full-care home in Indio, March, 2010. Maxine loved a good time and enjoyed a glass or two of wine in the evenings. She loved Thanksgiving, Christmas, birthdays, and holidays in general. She was already organizing the family Christmas events. She loved having her hair and nails done and fussed if she missed an appointment. Eating out was her hobby. Maxine is survived by her two daughters Donna Gail Tucker of Indio, California and Marsha Lucille Little of Palm Desert, California; two grandchildren, Carrie Lynn (Carl) Barros of Prescott Valley, Arizona, and Bradly William (Shannon) Crawford of Queen Creek, Arizona; five great-grandchildren, Matthew, Nicole, and Philip Crawford of San Marcos, Caifornia, and Alexander and Gregory Barros of Prescott Valley, Arizona. She leaves behind her wonderful and loving care-givers, Elizabeth Hengstler, Brett, Linda and Aris of Desert Cottage, who have truly been angels. At her request, no services are planned at this time. Mary was born in Scottsdale, Arizona on May 19, 1920 and lived in El Cajon for 68 years up until the time of her passing. She was married in 1938 to Aude Bennett "Bud" Willingham and raised four children at their home in El Cajon. In 1942, they opened Bud's Trucking with one single dump truck. Mary was an active part of that business until it was sold in 2001. Mary will be remembered for her creative talents, sassy attitude, and love of all things Irish. Her charming personality left a lasting impression on anyone who met her. Mary is survived by her children, Larry Willingham and wife Judy of Alpine, Sharon Landis and husband David of Ocean Shores, WA., Barbara Lawrence and husband Steve of Ramona, and Terry Willingham of El Cajon, along with numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Passed away following a long illness on September 28, 2010 at her home in Santa Rosa, California at the age of 62. Maggie was born in San Francisco and graduated from Lincoln High School. Maggie is survived by her husband Raimond F. Clary, Jr., son Shawn T. Parker of Santa Rosa, daughter Maureen Coveney and son-in-law Sean Coveney of Encinitas, CA.; brothers William O'Keefe of Santa Rosa, Michael O'Keefe of Sacramento, sisters Teresa McElhaney of Windsor and Patti O'Keefe of Guerneville. Maggie is also survived by granddaughters Shawndra Parker of Santa Rosa, Colleen Coveney of Encinitas, and grandson Brian Coveney of Encinitas in addition to numerous nieces and nephews. Maggie retired from the Santa Rosa School District after more than 20 years of service. She enjoyed reading immensely as well as getting her hands dirty in the garden. She enjoyed traveling and was an avid 49er and Cal Berkeley football fan. She was dedicated to her family. Maggie never had an unkind word for anyone and she often felt uneasy in the presence of those who did. Maggie will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Antoinette passed away peacefully on September 16, 2010 at her home in Santa Rosa after a brief but courageous battle with acute leukemia. At her death Antoinette was surrounded by her two children and her husband. She was a loving and devoted wife, a loving and caring mother and a loyal friend. She had a positive outlook on life, but was eager to speak out on matters of concern and disapproval. Antoinette was born in El Paso in 1937. As a child she moved with her parents to Los Angeles. She attended parochial schools and graduated from The Queen of Angels High School in 1956. She attended Immaculate Hearts Arts College in Los Angeles. Antoinette married Jeppe Juhl in 1960. They settled in the East Bay and moved to Sonoma County in 2002. Antoinette was a wonderful mother. She assumed numerous volunteer responsibilities in the community and schools. Later she studied an old Japanese Healing Art, Jin Shin Jyutsu. After completing her studies, she became a practitioner of Jin Shin Jyutsu. Antoinette was a true artist and remained an artist throughout her life. Antoinette will be sadly missed by her husband, Jeppe; and devoted children Elizabeth Caldwell, Laurits Juhl; and daughter-in-law Leslie Reed. MARIO CAPUTI Mario Caputi, age 88, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 28. He was born in Union City, New Jersey, to Ignazio and Cecilia Caputi. As a young man, he came west with his older brother Art to eventually settle in Modesto, California. He married Ada Ozbic on February 12, 1977, sharing 34 years together as partners in life, hand in hand. He retired at the age of 77 after 50 years as a plant engineer for Circle A-W Products (later B-Line Cooper). In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by his children Loretta Pumphrey, Marykay Gilbert, Michael and Ray Caputi, his grandson Joey Caputi, granddaughters Heather and Alexis, and great granddaughter Jayden. He also leaves behind many other extended family members and close friends. The youngest and last surviving son, he was preceded in death by his brothers Salvatore, Arturo, Emilio, Daniel and Armando and his two sisters Katherine Vierra and Ida McCarthy. A memorial service will be held at Lakewood Memorial Park and Funeral Home, 900 Santa Fe Avenue, Hughson, California, on Saturday, October 2 at 5 PM. Rosine passed away September 27, 2010 at the age of 82 in Riverside. She was born May 5, 1928 in Pueblo, CO, and had been a longtime resident of Lawndale, CA. She was the organist, treasurer and moderator at First Congregational Church of Lawndale for over 30 years and also served at Hyde Park Congregational Church in Los Angeles. She held many positions at both Cub Scout Pack 290 and Boy Scout Troop 290 of Lawndale for over 40 years. She received the distinctive Silver Fawn Award, the highest council level service award of the Boy Scouts of America. She was a longtime leader in Lawndale Council PTA, serving as president as well as holding other offices. She was elected to the Lawndale School Board and served two terms. In 1974, she was voted Lawndale Woman of the Year. She also enjoyed volunteer service with the Lawndale Angel Tree Program, PTA Christmas basket program and Meals on Wheels. She loved music and sang in several choirs. Mrs. Drees was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Frank (Pat/Pappy) Drees. She is survived by her children: David (Donna) Drees, Michael (Beatrice) Drees, Douglas (Jeanette) Drees, Ronald (Roxanne) Drees; 10 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren. It is with great sadness that the family of Michael L. McInnis, Solano County Superior Court judge, retired, announces his passing on Sept. 21, 2010. Mike died in accordance with his wishes: quietly, comfortably and quickly, with his family by his side. He was 87 years old., Born in Fairfield, he was the only son of the late Leo and Elsie McInnis. He graduated from Armijo High School, the University of Santa Clara, and the University of San Francisco School of Law. His college was interrupted by World War II, when he served in the United States Army as a First Lieutenant in the Field Artillery. Upon passing the bar, he put up his shingle and was a sole practitioner in Fairfield for 25 years. In 1979, he was appointed to the bench of Solano County Superior Court, Dept Four. His chambers were in what was once his high school. He liked to say he didn't travel far, but he covered a lot of ground., Mike's greatest love was his family, particularly his grandchildren. He loved to play golf and travel. He was so happy to travel to Scotland with his wife and dear friends and play the course at St. Andrews. He was a 50-year-plus member of the Olympic Club, San Francisco, as well as Green Valley Country Club. He was an accomplished drummer with the Armijo High School and Santa Clara bands, and enjoyed playing in the annual Kiwanis shows. His love of travel took him all over the world. Through his many pictures, we see the beautiful countries and people he met along the way. Governor), Santa Clara University Association, to name a few., He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Loretta; daughters, Mary Scully (Mike) of Napa, Elizabeth Ann Lewczyk (Tom) of Petaluma; and Loretta's children, Doug Richardson (partner Cindy) of Sacramento, Jeffrey Richardson (Dawn) of Vacaville, and Marianne Richardson of Fairfield. His cherished grandchildren are Meghan and Matt Scully, Kathleen, Laura and Will Lewczyk, and Joshua, Jason, and Audrey Richardson., Visitation will be held Sunday, Sept. 26, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home in Fairfield. Nancy M. Pendergast, age 70, wife of Fred J. Pendergast, Sr. of Sandy Hook died Thursday September 30, 2010 in Danbury Hospital. She was born in Union City, on May 30, 1940 a daughter of the late Francis X. and Anna C. (Yesinskas) Moss. Mrs. Pendergast was a graduate of St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing in Waterbury. She was a Registered Nurse at St. Mary's Hospital and at Fairfield Hills Hospital in Newtown. Mrs. Pendergast was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church and when her children were of school age, she volunteered at St. Rose School. Nancy also attended the Grace Christian Fellowship Church. She was a member of the St. Mary's School of Nursing Alumni Association. Prusan, Nathan January 28, 1920 - September 22, 2010 Nathan Prusan, born January 28, 1920 to Max and Mary Prusansky in Brooklyn New York, died September 22, 2010, Erev Sukkot, in Henderson, Nevada. On his 90th birthday, due to the care and devotion of Lilian, his wife, of 59 years, his extended family celebrated their beloved elder. He was the loving husband, father, grandfather, and uncle to a beautiful next generation and was fondly thought of by countless friends. Nate was the father of Jody and Peretz (Rebecca); and grandfather of Leora, Avital, and Noah. Patricia Lydon Furlong Pat Furlong, of Belvedere, died September 25, 2010, after a period of declining health. A Belvedere resident for almost 50 years, Pat was born in Hollywood, California (a fact she always enjoyed), on September 18, 1925, to Thomas Nicholas and Agnes Gibbons Lydon. When she was five years old, her family moved to Sausalito, where she attended grade school at Mount Carmel Academy. Pat always felt that Sausalito was a wonderful place in which to grow up. Before the Golden Gate Bridge was built, she and her older brother, Tom Lydon, of whom she was particularly fond, would hike into the hills behind Sausalito, to the dairy at Silva's Ranch for a glass of milk, or to Tennessee Valley and the ocean. During her high school years, Pat took the train from Sausalito to Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley, where she sang in the a cappella group and appeared in some of the school's musicals. At Tam High, she also made some lifelong friends who still get together regularly for lunch. She graduated from Tam High in January of 1943. At 17, she took a job as a secretary in the Engineering Department at Marinship in Sausalito. She later worked as an executive secretary at Bechtel Corporation in San Francisco; for several years, she was the executive secretary for Mr. Stephen D. Bechtel, Sr., the company's president. She enjoyed working for Mr. Bechtel very much. When she was 21, she met Donald Furlong, a Naval officer and engineer, who would become her husband for 60 wonderful years. They married on March 24, 1950, at the United States Naval Academy, in Annapolis, MD, with her mother as her attendant, and they lived for several years in the Washington, D.C., area. With Don's encouragement, Pat attended George Washington University, graduating with a Bachelor's degree in English Literature. Together, Pat and Don followed his Naval career to London, where they especially enjoyed Don's diplomatic posting. In London, Mrs. Furlong developed an interest in English antiques, she and Don enjoyed several trips around Europe, and they were invited to Buckingham Palace where they were presented to Queen Elizabeth - an unforgettable experience. From London, the Navy took them to the New York Naval Shipyard, and Mrs. Furlong worked in Bechtel's New York office in Manhattan. After his New York tour ended, Don retired from the Navy. Pat and Don moved to San Francisco, and, in 1962, they bought their home in Belvedere. A short time later, they were delighted to start another phase of their lives - parenthood. Their son, Tom, was born in 1965, and their daughter, Patty, was born one year later. Pat was very involved in her children's schools; she particularly enjoyed teaching a Great Books course to 7th and 8th graders at St. Hilary's School. During this time, Pat was also active in The Marin Symphony Auxiliary and the Raccoons Fundraising Branch of Marin General Hospital. Pat is a past member of The Century Club and The Francisca Club in San Francisco. She and Don also enjoyed attending the San Francisco Opera regularly for many years. Pat and Don made many wonderful friends playing tennis at The Belvedere Tennis Club and golf at The Meadow Club. They are also long-time members of The San Francisco Yacht Club. Pat and Don shared a love of travel, taking many trips together to destinations including Europe, Greece, China, India, Russia and the Middle East. Regular family trips to La Quinta, The Cloister at Sea Island, including a family trip to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary, and The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, were Pat's particular favorites. Pat was predeceased by her sister, Jane Ann Parisian, and by her brother, Thomas N. Lydon, who, at the age of 20, was killed in combat in France just before the end of World War II. Pat will be remembered as an independent, intelligent, and fun-loving lady, and she will be greatly missed by her family and many friends. September 26, 2010. Pat was a lifetime resident of San Pedro and attended Dana Junior High School and San Pedro High School. In 1943, Pat married John Burich, the love of her life, and they were married for 61 years. John's career as a commercialfisherman allowed them to travel extensively, most notably to Ghana, Africa where they lived for 4 years. "Old Grama", as she was affectionately known to her great-grandkids had a beautiful singing voice, was an amazing cook and baker, a talented seamstress and enjoyed entertaining family and friends over the years. In her 50s, Pat decided to enter the working world and became a waitress at the San Pedro Fish Market where she worked for many years. She loved her job there as it allowed her to see her friends on a daily basis and gave her the opportunity to meet new people each day. Above all, she was a wonderful and loving grandmother and great-grandmother who will be missed. Pat was preceded in death by her husband, John; her son, John, Jr.; infant son, Jimmy; and son-in-law, Bob Rollins. Pat is survived by her daughter, Judy Rollins; granddaughter, Robyn Miller and her husband, Kenny; grandson, Bobby Rollins and his wife, Julie; sister, Carol Pedersen; and brother, Les DeMott. Also missing "Old Grama" are her 6 great-grandkids, Maddie, Kenny and Jack Miller and Finley, Tanner and Grey Rollins. In 1983, having spent twenty fun-filled years at Newsweek Magazine, where he was Los Angeles Advertising Sales Manager, he found the job had lost its laughter, so when he turned fifty-five he initialed his final expense report and went off to see what the rest of life had to offer. During his time with Newsweek, Pat was active in magazine and advertising organizations. He served as president of the Magazine Representatives Association, served on the Boards of Directors of the Advertising Emergency Fund, Advertising Club of Los Angeles and Magazine Publishers Association/West. Prior to joining Newsweek, he was Regional Public Relations Director for Air France and Travel Editor at the Los Angeles Mirror-News. During his post-Newsweek years he satisfied his curiosity about "things" through a wide variety of activities: earning his certificate as an Emergency Medical Technician 1-A; did two seasons of extra work in film and television. For a period he worked two days a week in a book store allowing him to satisfy his love of books and thus added to his collection of books (4,000+). He kept up his reading on U.S. Military history. Did a bit of traveling and did NOT play golf. Pat leaves his daughter Kathleen Ann (Andrew) Cole, granddaughters, Deirdra Ann and Emma Elizabeth Cole, sons, Patrick Anthony, Daniel Vincent, Terence Matthew, Kevin Thomas and Joseph Damien. CROOK, RICHARD LEE Richard Lee Crook passed away peacefully at his home on September 25th, 2010 of natural causes. He was born on June 8th, 1945 to parents Nathan and Jean Crook, in Red Bluff, CA. He was a graduate of Red Bluff High School, where he played football and baseball. After graduation he began his distinguished real estate career in Gridley, CA. In 1995, he realized his lifelong dream by co-founding Ashbrook Communities, along with his partner and friend, Timothy McGowan. He served in the Real Estate development industry for 45 years. He was an active member of the San Diego and Riverside BIA. In addition to his real estate career, Richard was an active member of the Fallbrook community for over twenty years, supporting many philanthropic causes. He was an avid tennis player and a very special member of the Fallbrook Tennis Club. He loved spending time outdoors with family and friends, whether it was hunting, fishing, boating, mountain biking, or skiing. Richard is survived by his two children Erica Castellanos and Ashley Crook, son-in-law Carlos Castellanos, grandsons Gabriel and Julian Castellanos, sister Trudi Mendoza, and nephews Cory and Casey Mendoza. Ronald Frank Antonioli August 10, 1929-September 18, 2010 In Memory of a Good Man Ronald Antonioli passed away on Saturday with his family by his side. He suffered a cerebral hemorrhage after a sudden fall in his Novato home, on September 18. Son of the late Anna and Frank Antonioli, and brother to Robert Antonioli who passed away in 2007, Ron was raised in a Yugoslav-Californian family that extended from the Bay Area to the Central Valley. Growing up in San Francisco and Marin County, he attended Grant Primary, Lowell High School, and the College of Marin while working for his father's construction company in San Rafael. An accomplished builder with a keen sense of detail and strong drive, in the 1950s he formed his own independent company, Ronald Antonioli, Inc., and built more than 140 commercial structures in Marin County. As observed by George Wagner, Ron was a pioneer in the use of concrete tilt-up building technology, a process that involves pouring concrete building walls in frames atop the concrete floor, and when dried, tilting up the frames by crane and setting the walls in place. Ron was one of the leading contractor/developers for Northgate Business Park, Hamilton Industrial Park, and Bel Marin Keys Business Park. His active construction and development company was responsible for many local landmarks, such as the Handi-Kup building, the Tiburon Lodge, the Guide Dogs for the Blind campus, the China Cabin, and the Triple A Building. He developed many apartment complexes and shopping centers in Marin and throughout the Bay Area, but always maintained his Marin County base. Ron was passionate about the arts. According to his long-standing friend since their early childhood, William Knorp, Ron was a consummate pianist who found special pleasure in playing and in listening to others play. Many concerts were performed at his home throughout the years. These included more than a decade of support for the San Domenico School Music Conservatory and Virtuoso Program, and that program's chamber concerts, which, according to Faith France and Hugo Rinaldi, impacted the lives and careers of brilliant young artists at a critical point in their professional development. He also hosted performances by the College of Marin Choir, the Thursday Musical Program, and the Concerts Grand series. Terry McNeill remembers Ron's active interest in AMICA, the club that restored and played mechanical pianos such as Welte, Artreo-Angeles, Hupfeld and Ampico. He also recalls Ron's hosting of musicales, attended on some occasions by the famed Hungarian pianist, Ervin Nyiregyhazi, and later by the virtuoso Jorge Bolet. Ron's other interests included the collection of antiques and works of art. He was an aficionado of 17th and 18th century French and Italian art and antiques, which he patronized at home and studied in their contexts abroad, especially in Rome, Paris and St. Petersburg. If his interest in art was an expression of his keen artistic sensibility, his love of fine and exemplary antique furniture originated in his profound appreciation and understanding of the superior craftsmanship required for their production, doubtless based on his own work experience. Examples of his passion for fine craftsmanship were the frequent revisions and esthetic refinements made to his own house, to the amusement of many friends who dubbed it his Winchester House. Ron's philanthropic contributions to various organizations include generous gifts of funds and antiquities to the University of California at Berkeley, where he is commemorated on the north wall of the Doe Library as one of the "Builders of Berkeley." Whereas in his early years Ron had enjoyed duck hunting in the bay area wetlands and had made annual deer hunting trips to Wyoming and to his much-cherished Grand Tetons, in his later years he focused his efforts towards the protection of open space, especially in northwestern California. He was an avid hiker and mycologist, with a passion for the white king bolete and the golden chanterelle which he enjoyed as a favorite meal. At home, he carefully tended and nurtured his French garden, his cypresses, roses, and his vegetable plots. Among Ron's greatest pleasures was the company of his friends and family. Always a gentleman, according to his friend Jim Westenbroek, Ron was good-natured, with a lively and lovely spirit that will be missed by all who had him in their lives. He leaves behind his wife Guitty Azarpay, his children Laurie Anna Antonioli and son Daniel Ronald Antonioli, daughter and son of Gretchen Gregory, grand-daughter Mayana Morgan Lea and step-daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter Vesa, Gwenael and Nina Becam. As well as his sister-in-law Baerbel Freitag, and his extended family the Muziniches and the Antoniolis in the Bay Area and the Antonioli family in Budva, Montenegro. Ron had countless friends, some of whom he had known since childhood, and others with whom he subsequently developed close ties. A private memorial for Ron will be held at a later date. RAYMUNDO POSADAS JAN 13 1950 - SEPT 26 2010 On Sunday September 26, 2010 Raymundo Posadas passed away of a heart attack, ending his ten year battle with diabetes and high blood pressure. He will always be remembered as a man who loved his family dearly and had a knack for teaching and interacting with kids. He coached baseball and football in Modesto for several years and left a lasting impression with many youths. While in high school, Raymundo excelled in academics and athletics. He was a four year varsity football player at Sharyland High School in McAllen, Texas, where he was born. He was voted Football King, Most Athletic, FHA Sweetheart, and Mr. SHS. In 1975 he married his wife of 34 years, Cynthia M. Posadas. The following year they had a son, Robert Raymundo Posadas. In 1977 Raymundo graduated from U.C. San Diego with a degree in Biology. He finally settled with his family in Modesto where he worked at Gallo Winery as a lab technician for over 15 years. Some of Raymundo's favorite hobbies included collecting coins and baseball cards, reading, painting rocks, and learning the arts of calligraphy, origami, and massage. But most of all he enjoyed looking for bugs with his only grandson, Bobby Jr. Raymundo leaves behind his wife, son, and grandson, as well as 13 brothers and sisters: Leopoldo Guzman, Carlos Guzman, Pablo Guzman, Maria Zuniga, Hortencia Rodriguez, Rafael Guzman, Toni Thomason, Elisa Yvanes, Juan Guzman, Manuel Guzman, Gloria Posadas, Jose Guzman, and Consuelo Saldana. Richard passed away on September 23, 2010. He was a long time resident of the beach cities. He was born in Woonsocket, Rhode Island on October 5, 1950. He moved to California with his family when he was 15 years old. Richard immediately learned to surf, dive and sail, spending as much time on and in the ocean as possible. He graduated from Mira Costa High School in 1969 and soon after moved to Maui where he lived for 15 years. He is preceded in death by his father, Robert; and brothers, Bob and Roger. He is survived by his mother, Yvonne Barras of Hermosa Beach; his son (and fellow waterman), Cole Barras (18) of Manhattan Beach. He lived on the ocean and he died on the ocean. There will be a celebration of Rich's life on October 10th at 2pm at Port Royal Yacht Club, located at 555 Harbor Dr., Redondo Beach, CA 90277. Rita was with her family and caregivers who had attended her with love and great devotion since a stroke in late April. Rita's husband, Elmer, preceded her in death. Rita was born in Harbin, China on August 8, 1919. She was the daughter of James and Xenia Moore. Both had emigrated from Russia. She was brought up in San Francisco where she attended Galileo High School and met Elmer, the love of her life. They had been married 65 years. Rita and Elmer traveled the world and shared many interests. They had homes in Sacramento and San Francisco where they were active in clubs that included Rotary, the Sutter Club, Del Paso Country Club and the Dolphin Club. They kept a home at Lake Tahoe and spent many years involved with the Tahoe Yacht Club and the Concourse d'Elegance. In addition to traveling, Rita and Elmer loved to walk, dance and sing and spent many happy hours entertaining friends. Rita was known for her joy of life and loved the color red and roses. She is remembered for her sweetness and great optimism, always ready with a smile for strangers, babies and animals. Rita leaves three children: Rick(Myra), Lynn (Bill), John (Anna-Pia), five grand children, four great grand children, and three great great grandchildren. On June 30, 1959, a beautiful baby girl named Roslyn Rose Simon was born to the union of John and Josephine Simon while living in Palm Springs, Calif. Roslyn attended Cielo Vista Elementary and Palm Springs High School. She enjoyed working for Fish Louis market. She lived a carefree and very social life. She was a person who seized every opportunity she had to live her life to the fullest with enjoyment, excitement and even some craziness. God in his infinite wisdom and mercy called our beloved Roslyn Rose Simon home on September 15, 2010. She will be remembered and truly missed by all who knew her. Russell Steven Smotherman known as Steve or Smut to those who knew him. He was a resident of Yuba/Sutter County. He was born December 2, 1949 and went to be with his Savior on September 24, 2010. Steve's job was a construction estimator, but his life's mission was to see everyone he knew come to know the Lord. Steve was miraculously changed by the power of God at age 18 after being healed from a motorcycle injury. He showed up at New Life after a co-worker invited him to a youth service at New Life with the promise that he could meet girls. And boy did he meet a jewel, Juanita Pearl his wife of 38 years! He answered the altar call and Pastor Hood prayed for him. He was healed of bone cancer, gave his heart to the Lord and his life was changed, a heritage born. From that moment on Steve lived every day of his life searching for people who needed the same miracle in their lives. He was known as a faithful husband, loving father, the GREATEST PAPA EVER, devoted son, brother, dear friend, and pillar of the faith. MAK, STEPHEN M. December 28, 1946 - September 18, 2010 Stephen Mak died at age 63 years in Los Angeles on Sept. 18, 2010 from natural causes related to renal failure and diabetes. He was born in Canton, China Dec. 28, 1946 to Pauline Louie Mak and Allen Mak. An academic star and athlete in school, Stephen set the school record in the 100 yard dash for the C track at John Marshall High school in 1963. He earned scholastic distinction at UCLA, graduating magna cum laude with a degree in physics and Phi Beta Kappa honors in 1967. His further studies at M.I.T. was supported by a fellowship from the Atomic Energy Commission. Those college years were a great source of fond memories by his many friends. He is survived by his father Allen Mak along with siblings Priscilla Mak, Ernest Mak, Diana Mak and David Mak. There are numerous cousins, aunts, nieces and nephews from both the Mak and Louie families located in the U.S. as well as overseas. Stephen will be laid to rest in Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills on Oct. 2nd, 2010 with service at 2:30 in the Old North Church. |
Horowitz, Samuel June 17, 1908 - September 29, 2010 Dr. Samuel Horowitz passed away Wednesday, September 29th at his home in Tarzana, California at the age of 102. Sam Horowitz was born on the Lower Eastside of New York City on June 17th, 1908. He attended New York University and New York Medical College, graduating with an MD in 1933. He served with distinction with the 8th Division in World War II as a Battalion Surgeon in the European Theatre of Operations. After the war, Sam Horowitz met and married Doris Friedman in 1947, and started a family medical practice in Kew Gardens, New York. His medical practice grew to include large extended families. Sam enjoyed every minute of the practice of family medicine. In 1973, the family moved to California. Sam and Doris traveled extensively, visiting many areas of the world. Sam Horowitz was a wonderful, gentle and caring man, and will be missed by many. He is survived by Doris, his wife of 63 years, his sons Bud and Steve, daughter in law Linda and his beloved grandchildren, Seth and Rachelle. |
Santiago "Jimmy" Nino, 71, of Hanford, California passed away on September 22, 2010 in Hanford, California., Jimmy was born in Beeville, Texas on October 3, 1938 to Francisco and Inocencia Nino. Jimmy was raised and educated in Edinburg, Texas. On June 10, 1967 he married Beatriz Marroquin in Edinburg, Texas. Jimmy and Beatriz moved to Hanford, California in 1976 to make their home and raise their three children. He was of Catholic faith. As a young man, Jimmy was a member of the "Ricardo Guzman y Los Tres Aces" band and later developed his own band, "Jimmy Nino y Sus Favoritos". He was an accomplished musician with vocals, playing the guitar and his favorite instrument was the accordion. Jimmy was Head Custodian at the Kings River Hardwick School for over 33 years. Jimmy enjoyed his cup of coffee all day long, going to the casinos, taking care of his yard and quiet times in the evening. Sta "Andy" Anderson was born in June 1923 in San Francisco, Calif., of Swedish parents and died Tuesday, Aug 31, 2010. He was raised in Oakland. Growing up, he worked before and after school to assist his hard working parents. He also enjoyed dancing and loved going to the ballrooms. Andy enlisted in the, and served on three ships during, . He saw combat duty against the Japanese in the Pacific. After the War, he returned to the Coast Guard and served honorably for a total of 30 years as an enlisted man and commissioned officer. He traveled the Pacific from America to Asia and the North Pole to the South Pole. Andy particularly enjoyed his career because of all the daring and kindly deeds the Coast Guard performs, plus, its personnel serve all over the world in combat situations. Andy''s social life was very active and enjoyable. He always encouraged equal rights for women and all minorities. He loved to travel. He has been to all continents and all 50 of the United States. Andy was most recently married for 21 years to his loving wife, Annabelle, of Arroyo Grande who passed away 18 months earlier. He leaves his loving daughter, Carol Lawrence of Fresno, Calif.; loving granddaughter, Krystal Lawrence of Mesa, Ariz.; loving sister, Mildred Newton; stepson, Rick Bradley (Linda); and stepdaughter, Francine Kramer. Cremation has taken place and his remains will be strewn on the high seas from a Coast Guard ship with military honors. There will be no other services. |

Susan Rhea, 47 years young, of Apple Valley, went to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on Sept. 18th, 2010. Susan had been suffering from several illnesses. Our Lord has taken her into his arms and has relieved her of all her pain. Susan was born June 14th, 1963 in Ontario, CA. The Rhea family moved to Apple Valley in 1976. As a graduate of Apple Valley Senior High School in 1981, she kept in touch with many of her classmates, childhood friends from Ontario, and continued to build numerous friendships in the High Desert. Susan will always be remembered for her beautiful smile, her contagious laughter, wit, and her cheerful willingness to help others regardless of her own problems. She will be deeply missed by her husband Brett, family members, and all that loved and knew her. For the past 12 years, Susan was a cosmetologist in Apple Valley. Susan loved to listen, laugh, and learn during her long talks with clients all of whom became her good friends. Susan became a member of AA on June 29th, 1997 and remained sober until her death. Susan was an active and supportive member of AA where she met Brett in 1998 on her 34th birthday. They were married on Oct. 24th, 1999. They both spoke of their meeting each other at the annual AA picnic as the best birthday gift either had received, since it had come from God. Over the years, Susan paid forward the loving support and understanding that she received from AA to countless individuals. Susan was always there for anyone who was in need., Susan is survived by her husband Brett Ward; her mother and father, Bob and Dorothy Rhea of Apple Valley whom Susan talked with every day; her sister and brother-in-law Sandra and Eddie Phillips, nephews Kyle and Adam of Ontario, CA.; and many beloved uncles, aunts and cousins. Harrelson, Travis Miles, considered one of the world's best ukulele players, has died. Beloved husband, father, friend and musician passed away at home in Seal Beach, August 1, 2010, succumbing to cancer. Travis's lifelong love of Hawaiian and jazz music began via at-home jam sessions with visiting Islanders. He was equally at home playing at a trailer park luau, to a convalescent hospital audience or on a Tokyo concert stage, Travis performed with uke legends Herb Ota, Lyle Ritz, while music critics praised him as the "the Django Reinhardt of the ukulele. Travis is featured in the DVDs "Rock That Uke," "The Joy of Uke," and the CD "Holy Ukulele!" with his longtime friend Eddie Montana. To hear Travis play was to know him; his spirit of fellowship and sharing, his easy-going intensity; his grand sense of humor; his talent for finding joy in hard times; his delight in creating pleasure for others; all that came through his little uke. A modest man, but a huge presence to all who knew him, Travis will be deeply missed. He is resting in the Pacific Ocean he loved. Mary Alice Wasem October 14, 1918 - September 29, 2010 Mary Alice was born October 14, 1918 in Casper, Wyoming to Ethel and Glen Gallatin and was the oldest of five children. She married Walter Wasem in 1940 and had two children, Marya and Wallie. She supported the war effort at Bakersfield Air Force Base, Minter Field, in the engineering office, while her husband was in the navy overseas. She also worked as an office receptionist at Valley Office Supply, proof reader for Hall Letter Shop and worked at the Social Security office from where she retired after a heart attack. Mary Alice was a member of Alpha Zeta Beta sorority, an usher in the Woman's Club of Bakersfield, past Guardian of International Order of Job's Daughters, Bethel 28, and a member of Assistance League where she founded the Ayudantes Auxiliary Chapter. After serving as president of East Bakersfield High School's PTA, she was awarded an honorary life membership. She also was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. MAYS, WILLIAM C. Born: March 26, 1921 Died: September 28, 2010 He was married to Martha E. Dunlap for 65 years and Marie Hane for five years. He is survived by his second wife, seven children, seven grandchildren, and 16 great -grand children. Bill started his working life as a carpenter but felt called to the ministry and became a pastor in the Covenant church. He built churches in California and Oregon over thirty years before pursuing a successful career with the Equitable Life Assurance Society. He received his bachelors in psychology from Pasadena City College. Music was one of his great joys, playing the accordion, guitar, piano, and trombone. He also spent much time on his computer, emailing and talking to people around the world. His memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 2, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at the Bailey Center, MMCV (619-479-4790), 325 Kempton Street, Spring Valley, CA 91977. |
William J. Patterson San Francisco Philanthropist and Investor, Dies at Age 48 William J. Patterson, a prominent San Francisco investor and philanthropist who led the effort to revitalize the California Academy of Sciences, died on Friday, September 24, 2010 at age 48 surrounded by his wife, Elizabeth, and their three children. The cause of death was a brain tumor. Mr. Patterson's unwavering commitment to making a difference in the world was illuminated by his community leadership, his environmentally focused philanthropy, and the building of a highly successful investment partnership. His intellectual gifts and his ability to lead others towards positive change were reflected in his active involvement with a wide variety of local and national organizations. From a young age, Mr. Patterson displayed a natural talent for leadership and excellence. Born in Columbus, Ohio, Mr. Patterson spent his childhood in Grand Junction, Colorado, where he developed his reverence for the outdoors that led to his becoming an avid sportsman and environmentalist. Mr. Patterson went on to attend Harvard College, graduating magna cum laude in 1984. In his senior year at Harvard he was Co-Captain of the Varsity Lightweight Crew and President of the A.D. Club. After graduating, he studied economics for one year at Australia National University in Canberra, Australia as a Rotary Foundation Scholar. After working for Goldman, Sachs & Co., he attended the Stanford Graduate School of Business, graduating as an Arjay Miller Scholar in 1989. Mr. Patterson was named a Henry Crown Fellow of the Aspen Institute in 2004. Upon graduating Stanford, Mr. Patterson went to work with John H. Scully and William E. Oberndorf. In 1991 they founded SPO Partners & Co., which has become one of the nation's leading investment partnerships. During his tenure, Mr. Patterson helped lead a number of extremely successful investments and the firm's assets grew from a modest $40 million to over $8 billion. At the time of his death, he served as a Managing Director of SPO Partners, Chairman of the Board of Calpine Corporation and was a director of Rosewood Hotels and Resorts. Mr. Patterson was a former board member of the Plum Creek Timber Company, where he played an instrumental role in the repositioning and growth of that business. "Bill's extraordinary intelligence, confidence and leadership permeated SPO Partners & Co. from the first day he joined us," said John H. Scully. "His passion for excellence and hard work coupled with his warmth and core humanitarian instincts made him truly inspirational to the many he touched. He is, simply stated, irreplaceable." As Chair of the Board of Trustees of the California Academy of Sciences, Mr. Patterson led the revitalization of this nationally known institution. His leadership helped the Academy complete its $500 million capital campaign last year to build its widely praised new home in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park and greatly expand its environmentally based education programs. "Bill radiated a kind of incandescent presence and an irrepressible optimism that energized all those who worked with him," said Gregory C. Farrington, the Academy's Executive Director. "At the Academy, as in all aspects of his life, he wasn't just doing a job. He was expressing a passion. It showed." As a former trustee and board president of the Bay Area Discovery Museum, Mr. Patterson was keenly involved in a major capital campaign to expand and further develop this institution, which has become nationally acclaimed as a leading children's museum. Mr. Patterson also chaired the Stanford Business School Trust, served as a member of the Advisory Council for the Woods Institute for the Environment at Stanford, and with his wife, Elizabeth, he endowed a professorship in the field of energy and the environment at Harvard College. Mr. Patterson's extensive community involvement also included serving as chair of the investment committee of the Marin Community Foundation, a committee member and supporter of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and wide ranging charitable support for numerous non-profit organizations. He was a devoted husband, father, son, brother and partner, who vastly touched so many with his warmth, generosity of spirit, and zest for living. Mr. Patterson was an avid runner, collected wine, kept bees, and embraced remote travel and discovery to continually learn about the world around him. In addition to his wife of 23 years, Mr. Patterson is survived by his children, William, Eleanor and Graham. He is also survived by his mother, Joan T. McNab of Aspen, Colorado, his father, Dr. William R. Patterson of Grand Junction, Colorado and his siblings Robin J. Blackwood of Bozeman, Montana and Thomas A. Patterson of Portola Valley, California. A memorial service will be announced at a later time. William Eugene McKinnon of Lemoore passed away in a Fresno hospital on Thursday, September 23, 2010 at the age of 81. Bill was born May 20, 1929 to John and Bernadeta McKinnon in Dayton, OH. He graduated from Withrow High School in 1947 in Cincinnati, OH. After high school Bill joined the Navy. After the Navy Bill moved to Oakland where he worked for PG&E, then transferred to the credit card center of Union Oil where he worked until he retired in 1985. He worked 8 years in the navy supply center in Oakland until he moved to Lemoore and completely retired in 1991. Bill loved cross country travel aboard Amtrak. He was a deeply faithful catholic; he was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church. He went to Mass every Sunday that he was in town. Bill was able to celebrate the anointing of the sick., Bill is survived by his partner of 31 years, Don Siegal of Lemoore, 1 brother Charles A. McKinnon of Kettering, OH along with numerous nieces and nephews., A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9 a.m., Tuesday, September, 28, 2010 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Lemoore with burial to follow at Lemoore Cemetery. WILLIAM H. HURST JAN 3, 1922 - SEPT 22, 2010 Bill was born in Ochlocknee, GA. Upon graduation from high school in 1940, he joined the US Army, and rose to the rank of staff sergeant. After the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Bill was deployed to the South Pacific at Guadalcanal. During his deployment, he contracted malaria. He was transferred to Hammond General Military Hospital in Modesto. After being discharged, Bill decided upon a career as an electrician, becoming a Journeyman in May of 1949. His career as an electrician spanned 31 years. He remained a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for 65 years, until his death. He was a master craftsman at his trade and a good provider for his family, which grew to three sons and one daughter. Bill and his wife, Ethel, attended an evangelistic tent meeting put on by Billy Graham in Modesto on Oct. 28, 1948. They both went down the aisle and received Christ as their Savior. Bill was an active church member at Calvary Baptist Church, Modesto. He especially liked the weekly Bible studies. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating, camping, and traveling in his motor home. He also enjoyed gardening and sharing his fruits, nuts and vegetables. In his later years, Bill liked to begin his day at Perko's for coffee and to chat with the clientele and servers. Bill is survived by his wife of 68 years, Ethel Pat'' Hurst. When recently asked about the secret to having a long, happy marriage, he answered: When one of us starts to argue, the other shuts up.'' His other survivors include his three sons, William Ron'' Hurst (Pat) of Pismo Beach, Dennis Hurst (Julie) of Oakdale, and Daryl Hurst (Barbara) of Benicia; his daughter, Donna Hurst of Modesto; seven grandchildren, Stephanie Bellows, Trevor Hurst (Carmen), Heather Jakobsen (Paul), Justin Flood, Jennifer Flood, Joseph Hurst, Esther Hurst; and six great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his father, Christopher, his mother, Willie Mae and his brother, Hollis Hurst. A celebration of the life of William H. Hurst, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010, at Calvary Baptist Church, 1732 Miller Ave., in Modesto. WILLIAM J. LAMPKIN JUL. 19, 1920 - SEP. 26, 2010 William (Bill) Joseph Lampkin passed away Sunday, 9/26/2010 in Stockton, CA. He was born in Davis, CA on 7/19/1920 to William Joseph Lampkin and Hilda Alma Huberty. Bill, an only child, was raised on the family's ranch in Ripon, CA, attending Atlanta Grammar School and Ripon High School. He also attended Stockton Jr. College, and the University of Pacific, where he earned a degree in Accounting. During, , Bill joined the US Army. He was stationed in Philippines and, during his tenure, promoted to Sergeant First Class. After his discharge in 1946, Bill started his long-standing and esteemed career with Pacific Gas & Electricity. He worked at PG&E offices in Stockton, San Francisco, and finally Salinas where he was promoted to Manager of Customer Services of Coast Valleys Division. In his tenure with PG&E, Bill also served as Chairman of the Pacific Service Association Educational Committee. In 1947, Bill married the love of his life, Muriel Ila Grube, with whom he shared 57 wonderful years of marriage before her death in 2005. Together they had two sons and a daughter and, eventually, three grandchildren. Bill's family was the light of his life and times spent together were some of his favorite memories. In addition, Bill was an outstanding community member, enthusiastically serving the Jr. and Sr. Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis, Toastmasters, and Masons, and was a past President of the Lion's Club. He was involved with his children and other area youngsters with the Boy Scouts and Little League Baseball. In retirement, Bill also volunteered with such organizations as United Way, the Census Bureau, the American Legion, the, , and the Small Business Administration Office. He and Muriel were members of the First Baptist Church of Modesto. Bill had a zest for life, and was loved by everyone who had the pleasure to know him. He was a consummate people person, with a great sense of humor, a fun-loving and gregarious nature, and a genuine care for others. He had many passions, including playing the saxophone, Big Band music, salsa dancing, and all sports, especially his beloved San Francisco 49'ers and Giants. He was an avid golfer, participating in this sport until recently. His outgoing and adventurous spirit led Bill and Muriel to travel throughout the world in his retirement. In addition to his wife, Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his eldest son, Jim. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Rosann Lampkin, of Chico, CA, his daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Fred Green, of Lapeer, MI, three grandchildren, Malia Lampkin and Evan and Erin Green, his sister-in-law and her husband, Darlene and Wes Cooper of Boise, ID, his sister-in-law, Jody Grube of Carmichael, CA, and his dear friend Lois Anderson, of Stockton, CA. He also leaves behind many other extended family members and close friends. Arrangements are being presided over by Lakewood Memorial Park and Funeral Home, 900 Santa Fe Ave. Hughson 95326. A Mass of Christian Burial for William James Knauff, 55, of Vacaville, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 4, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1791 Marshall Road, Vacaville. Father Mathew will officiate. Burial will follow at Rolling Hills Cemetery in Richmond, Calif., Bill passed away on Sept. 27 in Vacaville. He was born on July 13, 1955, in Berkeley, Calif., to William and Patricia Knauff., He had worked for the past 23 years at 7UP Bottling Co. in Vallejo., Bill had many interests. He was an A's fan, played softball in several local men's leagues and was involved in his kids' activities, coaching both Little League and Pony Tail softball. Bill also enjoyed old cars. William M. Silveira Passed away peacefully on Monday, September 27, 2010 at the age of 95 with his family at his side. William was born to Manuel and Rose Silveira on April 26, 1915. He is survived by his son, William (Donella), daughter, Linda; granddaughter, Christy (Steven); great grandchildren, Justin and Katelyn; sister, Elaine Kuegeman, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Silveira was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Phyllis in 2002. A native of San Francisco, he served in the U. S. Army as a cook during WW II with the 126th Gun Battalion and retired from Railway Express Agency after 30 years. Proud member of Commerce High School Alumni Association.
