Lila Ann Grasberger

Lila Ann Grasberger, ne Hulse, passed away gently in her sleep on September 3, 2010. She died on her own terms, with dignity and faith in the Lord, looking forward to spending eternity with her beloved husband, Bill, who preceded her in death by 13 years. Lila was born in Queens, N.Y., on December 20, 1927, and grew up in Port Jefferson, Long Island. In 1947, she married Bill Grasberger, then a salesman for PPG, and moved from house to house and city to city as his career advanced and the family grew. From Long Island to Philadelphia to Cleveland to New York to Tokyo to Pittsburgh to San Diego to Bethel, she quickly transformed each new house into a warm comfortable home for her husband and children, as well as for other family members whenever they were in need. As a wife and mother, Lila was encouraging, forgiving, supportive, caring, fiercely loyal, and above all, loving. She had a great sense of humor; and ok, perhaps she was strong-willed, opinionated and stubborn as well, but as she liked to say with a twinkle, "My halo is held on by my horns!" Lila's kindness, laughter, wisdom, and effervescence will be sorely miss by her three children, John and his wife, Eva Goode, of San Diego, CA, Coral Presti and her husband, Bill of Bethel, and Mick and his wife, Patty of Texas; five grandchildren and their families, Erin Grasberger, Michael and Allyson Presti, Bill and Amanda Presti, Thomas and Kathy Presti, and Matthew Presti and his fianc, Katie Bragdon; six great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends throughout the country whose lives she touched. We will celebrate her life at a Memorial Mass to be held at St. Mary Catholic Church, 26 Dodingtown Road, Bethel, at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 18, 2010. As Lila was a breast-cancer survivor, in lieu of flowers, please consider making donations in her name to the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Fund (, ) or to St. Mary Church, Bethel. Lila's family members wish to express their deep appreciation to the staff of Danbury Hospital and Bethel Health Care Center for their professional and compassionate care of Lila during the last few months of her life.

After graduating in 1937 from Santa Ana Junior College in California where he was Student Body President, he attended Northwestern University at Evanston Illinois on a one year scholarship (too cold), and then graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1939. He worked for Equitable Life In Oakland and then served as an Aviation Supply Officer, US Navy in World War II. While stationed at Norfolk, VA, he met a young WAVE officer, Amelia Corvaia. For him it was love at first sight. For her, he stood out among the young naval officers as gentlemanly, generous, and solicitous of others. After a full court press, he was able to convince a young Italian girl from Brooklyn to marry him in September 1944. They were married for 51 years. While in the Navy, in addition to serving at Norfolk, he was stationed in the Canal Zone, Panama, then aboard the USS Boxer and finally he served on the staff of the Commander Air Force, Pacific Fleet, in Pearl Harbor. He left active duty in 1946 as a Lt. Commander. He was an intuitive entrepreneur, working in commercial real estate, consumer products, and the automotive after market industries. More than once, he took tiny companies and grew them into leaders in their field. Throughout his career his personal mantra was "Integrity, Performance, and Improvement." He believed that customer service was paramount. In 1969, he became president of Motor and Equipment Manufacturer's Association (MEMA) and also served as president of the Automotive Presidents' Council. He was honored in 1971 by MEMA for outstanding service to the industry. He believed strongly in volunteer service. He was a volunteer for Clausen House, and served on the boards of the Oakland Symphony, the Easter Seal Society of Alameda County, the East Bay Community Foundation, and Holy Names University, where in 2007 he was awarded a doctorate of Humane Letters. He was a generous benefactor of Northern Lights School and Next Step Learning Center in Oakland. To say he was an avid golfer, is an understatement. A member of Sequoyah and Orinda Country Clubs, he loved to taunt his playing partners (much better golfers) that he had seven "holes in one" compared to their many fewer. Neil was blessed to marry Barbara Bonds in 1998 and they lived happily in Lafayette. In addition to being a part of the family, Barbara was a wonderful wife and best friend to Neil for which the entire family is grateful. He was a generous, loving, inspiring man who cared deeply about his family and friends. He loved life and had a great sense of humor. He was a mentor to untold numbers of people. He was a loyal and thoughtful friend to countless and they repaid him during the last months of his life with visits and messages of love and support. He will be sorely missed. Services will be 10:00 AM Friday September 10, Christ the King Catholic Church, 199 Brandon Road, Pleasant Hill. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to a charity of your choice or to Holy Names University, 3500 Mountain Blvd., Oakland CA 94605.

William G. Beck

Fire Captain William G. Beck, distinguished retired Pomona Fire Captain, died at the age of 85 on August 30, 2010 at Pilgrim Place Health Services Center in Claremont, CA. He died peacefully with Marjorie, his loving wife of 46 years, by his side. Bill was born on February 14, 1925 in Pomona to parents Leo and Gladys Beck and enjoyed a large extended family. His grandfather John Beck was an early prominent businessman who had 13 children. The family moved to Chino when Leo decided to open Beck's Market, primarily a butcher shop, in Chino. Bill was raised there and graduated from Chino High School in 1942. He spent the remainder of his life as a Pomona resident. In April, of 1948, after holding a variety of jobs and a short stint in the Navy, he joined the Pomona Fire Department. He was influenced in his career choice as a child, watching his grandfather, John respond to fires as a volunteer firefighter. His uncles, Ernie and Bill were also firemen. Bill recalled the biggest fires he fought were the Pomona High School blaze in 1958, the Ganesha Hills fire in 1970, and he told stories of having his engine overrun by fire while assisting on dangerous brush fires in Santa Barbara. Bill enjoyed a distinguished career as Fireman, Engineer, and retired on February 28, 1977 at the rank of Fire Captain after nearly 29 years of loyal, dedicated service with the City of Pomona Fire Department. Near the end of his career and for years after, he compiled the history of the Pomona Fire Department from its inception to 1979 in 66 volumes of hard-copy and pictures, He also served as the President of the Pomona Valley Historical Society with special interest in Pomona's adobes, and was instrumental in the cleanup and maintenance of the Spadra Cemetery where Spadra settlers of the 1800 are buried. Bill had a passion for long range ocean fishing. He especially enjoyed trips out of San Diego and was known as an exceptionally competent fisherman, with immaculate equipment and a jovial disposition. When Bill came in from a trip, he was usually met by one of his brothers with a pickup truck where the catch was iced in the truck bed and driven home for cleaning. The family, and many others remember one trip where the tail fin of a sizable blue fin tuna extended over three feet above the tailgate. He will be remembered for his calm friendliness, even disposition, for his willingness to listen and help others and his integrity. His family will remember his care of other family members, and on the lighter side, all the fish he provided for the family, and his skill at making the family recipe of home-made vanilla ice cream which he brought to all of the family gatherings. Bill is survived by his wife Marjorie Beck, his son Steve Beck and stepsons Mike and Jeff Case, and three step-grandchildren. Also his sisters Jean Papac, Barbara Chandler and Lupe Woodson, his brother Leo Beck, Jr., and by many loving and caring nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by brothers Fred Beck and John Beck. Services will be held at Todd Memorial Chapel on Garey Ave. in Pomona, on Friday, September 10 at 1PM. There will be a public viewing on Thursday, September 9 from 5-8PM. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations be made to VNA Hospice Claremont, 150 W. First St. Ste 270, Claremont, CA 91711.
