James Red Loakes

Dubbed "The Little Colonel" by Minnie Pearl Jeffrey Ford, son of the late entertainer Tennessee Ernie Ford, announced today the passing of Ford's lifelong manager, confidante, and closest friend, James "Red" Loakes, who died Saturday, September 4, 2010 after a long illness. Loakes was born October 25, 1929 in Los Angeles, Calif., the oldest son of Margaret and Adelbert Loakes. From the earliest days of his youth, he was taught the value of an uncompromising work ethic; a trait that would define him throughout his life. Enamored by vaudeville and show business from his earliest memories, Loakes began his career behind the scenes at twelve years old, as the Pony Ride Coordinator at Lucas KiddieLand in West Covina, an early precursor of Disneyland. Within weeks of enrolling as a freshman at El Monte High School, he became the school's youngest stage manager, handling backstage duties for every production and function held at the school during his four years there, from 1943 to 1947. In 1947, that same skill and reputation landed him the position of stage manager at the El Monte Legion Auditorium, where he began handling the production duties for Thursday night boxing and wrestling matches. The following year, when bandleader and radio star Cliffie Stone booked the Auditorium for his 'Hometown Jamboree' Saturday night dances, he was told to talk to Red Loakes. That meeting set the stage for one of the greatest partnerships in show business - Stone's newest act was a singer from Tennessee who would go on to become one of the world's most celebrated entertainers - he went by the stage name of Tennessee Ernie Ford. "Cliffie, Jim and Dad were inseparable for nearly half a century," Ford's son, Buck said. "Saying Jim was Dad's manager doesn't come close to the place he held in his career, his life, and our family's life. He was Dad's best friend, his most loyal friend, and that friendship bound them together beyond what any one word description could convey." It was a friendship and partnership that would take Loakes from the wings of the El Monte Auditorium to the studios of NBC and Capitol Records, to the great performance halls of the world, and to the inner circle of Presidents; a half century career that was nothing short of legendary. In the early nineties, Loakes moved to Palm Springs, where he spent the last years of his life, managing Ford's extensive music publishing catalog, and other interests, including producing the cooking classes at the Cary Grant estate for famed Chef-Without-Borders Andrew Copley, at the Four Star restaurant, Copley's On Palm Canyon. A veteran of the United States

Over the years Jay developed the ability to play by ear and became known as an accomplished jazz pianist. He additionally had the ability to play most any reed instrument; a skill which came in handy throughout his life., Jay's early college years were spent studying music at the University of the Pacific. Upon graduation he joined the Navy Jazz Band and toured for four years. After the Navy, Jay returned to school to study medicine at, where he met his wife, physician Lorraine McGee. They subsequently practiced in Fort Bragg and Arcata California where they had their children., Jay focused on family practice and later emergency medicine before moving the family to Loomis, California in 1976., Jay continued to play music on a daily basis for his family, and on weekends with groups of friends for neighborhood parties. He also occasionally played for local school productions such as 'Hello Dolly', and 'Annie Get Your Gun' at the Music Circus in Sacramento., While living in Loomis, Jay established a medical practice in Folsom, California, and played a major role in running the house as his wife began a grueling medical residency program. After many years in his own practice, he joined FHP as a resident physician until he decided to work fewer hours, moving part time to a public medical clinic in Sacramento., Jay and Lorraine retired in 1997, then promptly sold their house and purchased a motor home. They spent the next few years driving around the USA and Canada and also traveling to over 40 countries on all 7 continents, attending jazz festivals, visiting friends and family, and exploring new intriguing cultures., Done with living on the road, Jay and Lorraine next moved to an active senior community in Rio Vista, California. Jay immediately placed an ad looking for musicians of all skill levels, and formed the 'Trilogy Jazz Band'. This not only helped Rio Vista have access to great music, but many senior residents rekindled their interest in instruments they used to play, or picked up new ones. The Trilogy Jazz Band today numbers some 60 members and continues to perform in the Rio Vista area., When Lorraine had a stroke in 2007, the couple moved to Moss Beach, California to live in a home-style environment near their eldest son and grand children; she passed away in early 2008. Joe Morello

Joe Morello On September 3, 2010 Joe Morello passed from this life surrounded by his family. Having enjoyed 80 years of family, business, sports, and golf, Joe succumbed after a hard-fought battle with multiple myeloma. A gentleman, a man of integrity, honesty, kindness, and generosity, Joe is survived by the family of which he was so proud - his wife (Augie) of 58 years, his children and their spouses (Linda Morello and Javier Gomez, John and Heather Morello, Joe Morello and Trish Breslin), 4 grandchildren (Catherine, Hannah, Mateo, and Anna Morello), cousins and family, and his beloved dog, Tuffy. Joe, son of Maria and John Morello of Mill Valley, lived 77 years of his life in Marin County. He graduated from Park School and Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley, and he earned an AA from the College of Marin. A great athlete, Joe was co-captain of his schools' baseball teams and a member of the Jr. Seals. He was a co-founder of the Southern Marin Little League and he coached numerous Little League and C.Y.O. basketball teams. A dedicated fan of the 49ers (season ticket holder) and the Giants, Joe enjoyed both playing and watching sports. The day after Joe married Augie, IJ columnist Jim Gilmartin wrote "Tiburon third sacker Joe Morello didn't show up for his team's game yesterday. Joe was too busy - getting married. The new auxiliary third sacker is the former Augie Perry." And, Joe loved golf, playing several times every week and planning his calendar around his golf games. Joe's great passion was the business in which he co-partnered with the Canepa family - the Mill Valley Market. Both Jim and Bob Canepa were respected and beloved business partners and friends with whom he shared 35 years in business. As the produce buyer at the Mill Valley Market, Joe dedicated himself to bringing the freshest and best produce to his customers and in meeting their special wants and needs. He took pleasure in learning everything he could about fine foods and wines and sharing that with family, friends, and customers. No one could barbecue a steak or prepare a crab dip quite like Joe. At his 50th wedding anniversary, he remarked that he was "the luckiest man in the world" - he had had a business, a wife, and a family he loved. Joe was a member of numerous organizations (SIRS Branch 47, Italian Catholic Federation, Italian Athletic Club). He dedicated his time to his children's schools and to his parish. He enjoyed many friendships - other gentlemen who shared his love of sports, enjoyed his company, and supported him during these past two years of declining health. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Joe and his family wish to express their gratitude to the staff of the Greenbrae Care Center for their extraordinary and compassionate care. And, Joe held his physicians (Dr. Robert Van Herick and Dr. Bobbie Head) in the highest esteem. He valued and respected their care and treatment. Joe Morello was laid to rest in a private burial on Friday, September 10, 2010. Family and friends are invited to attend a celebratory service to be held on Saturday, October 9, beginning with a 10:00 AM Mass at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 3 Oakdale Ave., Mill Valley. Three more children followed, making for lots of hands to work the meat processing plant. Siebo ,Lisa and the three younger children moved to Torrance in 1973 where he pursued traditional sausage making at the Alpine Village. Siebo retired from the business in 1985 and moved to Lompoc and then to Goleta where he has resided for the last 18 years. He continued to pursue his love of sausage making during many wonderful family sausage making parties. He could be seen most days working in his son's garden, a "job" he loved and took very seriously. Siebo was preceded in death by his loving wife Lisa. He is survived by children Hans Onnen of Omaha, Malene Miller (Denny) of Lompoc, Johann Onnen (Kathy) of Papillion, Eric Onnen (Kelly) of Goleta, Heidi Sarria (Fernando) of Agoura Hills and Tim Onnen (Jennifer) of Buellton; grandchildren Yelena and Stephanie, Aimee and Barry, Emily and Samantha, Melissa, Nichole and Macy and Elijah; and great-grandchildren Alex, Cody, Makenzie, Dylan, Gia, Taiven (Little Siebo) and Finley. Siebo was a proud Papa and Opa and will be greatly missed by all of his family.
