Amber Nicole Stumbaugh Left this world suddenly Tuesday, August 31, 2010, in Ames, Iowa. On that day, the world lost an amazing and inspiring person. Amber was born on October 18, 1975. She grew up in San Carlos, California, where her parents, Nick and Bobbie Stumbaugh, and her brother, Kurt, still live. She is survived by her partner of 13 years, her soul mate, Jill Sherwood, and her beloved pets, Floyd, Kelty, Margaret and Herbert, all of Ames, Iowa. She is also survived by many grieving family members in Sequim, Washington, Seattle, Washington, and Austin, Texas. Amber had a lifelong dream of becoming a veterinarian and she was pursuing that dream with vigor. After graduating from Sequoia High School, she went on to receive a bachelor's degree in Animal Science at the University of California Davis and a master's degree in Genetics at Iowa State University. After returning briefly to California, Amber returned to Iowa to follow her heart. She was in her fourth year of Veterinary School at Iowa State University, and well on her way to becoming a remarkable veterinarian. Her love for animals and compassion for people was a gift that she was sharing with the world. She inspired and encouraged many people in the pursuit of her dream. She loved life and family, and was always there for anyone. She always had a smile and never took life too seriously. She loved being behind the lens of the camera and took many stunning photos. She and Jill found great joy in simple pleasures such as walking their dogs or sitting with their cats. One of her favorite things in life was being on her bicycle, either spending the week riding with friends and family or simply heading out for a quick ride. She had completed triathlons, and many weeklong bike rides, including RAGBRAI in Iowa and the AIDS/Lifecycle ride in California. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her, and the many people whose lives she touched throughout her too short time on this Earth. Her spirit will continue to live on in all those who loved her, as she would have liked. A Celebration of the Life of Amber Stumbaugh will be held Saturday, September 11, at 10:00, at Carrington Hall, Sequoia High School, Redwood City, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that contributions be made in Amber's name to: ISU Vet Med Endowment Fund Scholarships in memory of Amber Nicole Stumbaugh College of Veterinary Medicine 1600 S. 16th Street Ames, IA 50011-1250 |

DERRILL E. YAEGER Derrill E. Yaeger, a prominent local attorney, quietly passed away on Sunday, September 5, 2010 in Riverside after a long illness. He was born on April 2, 1927 in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 83. Derrill leaves his wife of 59 years, Francee, daughter Neddi, daughter-in-law Andrea and grandchildren Jacqueline, Elizabeth, Emily and Adam. Derrill\'s son, Kurt Yaeger, also a local attorney, recently and sadly preceded him in death. Derrill practiced business and real estate law and was a principal shareholder with the Corona firm of Clayson, Mann, Yaeger & Hansen for 45 years. He was an expert in land use law and a leader in Inland Empire real estate development. The cities of Corona, Riverside and Beaumont all carry his legacy of well-planned residential and commercial development. Derrill represented a diverse clientele in the course of his career, ranging from the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, La Sierra University and Loma Linda University to 3M Corporation, the Bren Company, and entertainer Desi Arnaz. He was known for his careful and comprehensive preparation, often beginning his workday at 4:00 a.m. Derrill was a creative deal-maker and tactician, respected by clients and adversaries alike for his fierce but ethical advocacy, sage counsel and remarkable powers of persuasion. Corona This Month, the former Corona Chamber of Commerce Publication referred to Derrill as "the Perry Mason of zoning law" in an article about his success in representing landowners before the Corona City Council. Corona voters established a moratorium on major land development during the 1970s to preserve much of the city\'s lands for an agricultural use that increasingly lacked economic viability. Derrill was a leader in the effort to have the moratorium lifted. He organized the South Corona Developer\'s Consortium to plan the development of the former citrus groves in the area south of Ontario Avenue into a thriving, attractive community with good roads, schools and parks. La Sierra University closed its agriculture program in the early 1980\'s and was looking for a productive use of its farmland. Derrill\'s vision and energy led the transformation of the University\'s surplus property into the beautiful Riverwalk development, creating a new southern gateway into the City of Riverside and a major boost to the endowment of the University. Derrill worked tirelessly on the planning and land use changes necessary for Riverwalk for over ten years. Thanks to his effort, the specific plan for the project passed the City Council with no opposition. Loma Linda University owned approximately 300 acres of sheep pasture south of Interstate 10 in Beaumont. Derrill led out in the effort to plan and market that property for development resulting in the successful mixed use development that includes homes, a shopping center, the California Highway Patrol office, and the new Highland Springs Medical Plaza, again providing support for the Loma Linda University endowment. Derrill\'s advice was sought by a number of other colleges and universities in the development of their campus properties. Law was really a second career for Derrill. After attending high school at La Sierra Academy, he served in the |

Neil McDaniel Of Lafayette passed away peacefully Sunday, September 5. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, his daughters and their husbands, Marianne and Bill Gagen and Joanne and Terry Dale. He was particularly proud of his grandchildren, Daniel, Neil and Patrick Gagen, and Erica and Andrew Hahn, and great grandchildren, Madeline Gagen and Colten Hahn. He considered them to be his legacy. Neil was born October 6, 1916, the second son of Joseph Kyle McDaniel and Lotta Helen Wilson in Walla Walla, Washington. He attended grammar schools in Oregon and Washington, and graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1934. After graduating in 1937 from Santa Ana Junior College in California where he was Student Body President, he attended Northwestern University at Evanston Illinois on a one year scholarship (too cold), and then graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1939. He worked for Equitable Life In Oakland and then served as an Aviation Supply Officer, US Navy in, . While stationed at Norfolk, VA, he met a young WAVE officer, Amelia Corvaia. For him it was love at first sight. For her, he stood out among the young naval officers as gentlemanly, generous, and solicitous of others. After a full court press, he was able to convince a young Italian girl from Brooklyn to marry him in September 1944. They were married for 51 years. While in the Navy, in addition to serving at Norfolk, he was stationed in the Canal Zone, Panama, then aboard the USS Boxer and finally he served on the staff of the Commander Air Force, Pacific Fleet, in Pearl Harbor. He left active duty in 1946 as a Lt. Commander. He was an intuitive entrepreneur, working in commercial real estate, consumer products, and the automotive after market industries. More than once, he took tiny companies and grew them into leaders in their field. Throughout his career his personal mantra was "Integrity, Performance, and Improvement." He believed that customer service was paramount. In 1969, he became president of Motor and Equipment Manufacturer's Association (MEMA) and also served as president of the Automotive Presidents' Council. He was honored in 1971 by MEMA for outstanding service to the industry. He believed strongly in volunteer service. He was a volunteer for Clausen House, and served on the boards of the Oakland Symphony, the Easter Seal Society of Alameda County, the East Bay Community Foundation, and Holy Names University, where in 2007 he was awarded a doctorate of Humane Letters. He was a generous benefactor of Northern Lights School and Next Step Learning Center in Oakland. To say he was an avid golfer, is an understatement. A member of Sequoyah and Orinda Country Clubs, he loved to taunt his playing partners (much better golfers) that he had seven "holes in one" compared to their many fewer. Neil was blessed to marry Barbara Bonds in 1998 and they lived happily in Lafayette. In addition to being a part of the family, Barbara was a wonderful wife and best friend to Neil for which the entire family is grateful. He was a generous, loving, inspiring man who cared deeply about his family and friends. He loved life and had a great sense of humor. He was a mentor to untold numbers of people. He was a loyal and thoughtful friend to countless and they repaid him during the last months of his life with visits and messages of love and support. He will be sorely missed. Services will be 10:00 AM Friday September 10, Christ the King Catholic Church, 199 Brandon Road, Pleasant Hill. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to a charity of your choice or to Holy Names University, 3500 Mountain Blvd., Oakland CA 94605. |

Patricia Rose Cummings Oct. 26, 1927 - Sept. 5, 2010 Peacefully passed away surrounded by loving family on September 5, 2010 after a brief battle with cancer. She was married to the late James Cummings for 38 years who preceded her in death in October 1989. Survived by her son Dan (Sylvia); daughter Cathy Ver Hage (Dan); Grandchildren Matthew (Sharlyn); Michelle; Erin and Kelly Ver Hage. She was also blessed to have enjoyed her time with her great grandchildren Kayley, Ryanne, Jason and Michael. Pat was pre-deceased by her brother Richard (Bea), and Lois (Marvin). Many loving nieces, nephews and long time friends who will miss her company, wit and companionship also survive her. Always the adventurous traveler, Pat made her way west from Wisconsin to California at the end of WWII and met her husband from Texas in San Francisco. They raised their family in the Sunset District during the past 53 years. During their 38 years of marriage, Pat and Jim shared their love of travel with their close friends and family. Pat spent many years working in the restaurant business at Manning's, Guckenheimer as well as a post-retirement stint at See's Candies. Since the passing of our dad in 1989, our mom lived her life the way she wanted - independent and full of adventure. She has traveled to every continent (except Antarctica) and just completed a wonderful cruise to Alaska several weeks ago. She enjoyed her trips with the YMCA, afternoons in her yard and family gatherings. Pat brought a smile to the face of all the people she met and left memories that will never be forgotten. We invite her friends to visit the Celebration of her life on Friday, September 10, at 12:00 noon at DUGGAN'S SERRA MORTUARY, 500 Westlake Avenue, Daly City. Viewing at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations in memory of Patricia Cummings to the San Francisco Zoo. |

TATE RENEGADE THORSON (née Rachel Loraine Thorson) Born: Sept. 30th, 1972, La Mesa, CA; Died: Aug. 22nd, 2010 Riverside, CA Tate was our son, brother, uncle, beloved friend and counsellor. Born in San Diego, grew up 10 years in Toronto, Canada (1974-1984), and attended Gage Middle School and Poly High School (Class of 1990) here in Riverside, as well as UCR (Class of 1996), including a year abroad in Brighton, England. Tate was a curious fellow, intellectually probing, and decidedly individual in his outlook on life and people. He was immensely sensitive to detail, to nuance. His wit was drier than a fine Scottish single-malt whiskey, loving to deliver poignant punch lines with a deadpan expression, tho\' a slight twinkle in his eye was distinctly perceptible. Tate began his professional life as a teacher of English at Ramona High here in Riverside after completing his studies at UCR. In 2000 he moved to L.A., continuing to teach, to write prose, as well as writing and performing his own music, eventually moving on to providing counselling. Tate had a close coterie of friends. Tate touched, affected and titillated many - through the music he wrote and performed on his beloved guitars (he was in a series of bands, lastly "Dusty Drawers and the Pantalones"), through his teaching, and especially through his empathic counselling of at-risk youth in L.A.. Tate contracted cancer initially in 2002 and continued to lead his life jocularly, doggedly, and sententiously despite the phases of physical fatigue the illness and its treatment engendered. A couple of years before his death he determined that his identity to date as "Rachel" was not who he was, and became the Tate he sensed within. He is deeply missed and yet all who have been affected by him bear a piece of "The Tate-ness" gleaming vivaciously within them. As was his wish, a scholarship for at-risk lgbtq youth has been established in Tate\'s name through LifeWorks Mentoring, the youth services division of the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center. Bill was born December 21, 1928, on a farm near Laquey, Missouri to Harry and Pearl Thompson. In 1933 the family left the farm and began the Great Depression Migration. During the next years Bill attended seven different schools in four different states by the time he reached the fifth grade. Most years he started the school year in November or December, due to the family working harvesting crops. He was a mediocre student until a wonderful teacher, Phrona E. Bates, got him transferred to her school where she had 11 students and needed at least 12 to be able to keep her one room school operating. Her students included the first to eighth grades. Mrs. Bates changed Bill from the average student he was, to achieving the highest score in a County wide test in Sonoma County, California given during the eighth grade. Bill moved to Humboldt County in 1947 and worked at lumber mills and later as a timber faller until 1951 when he served in the Merchant Marines and The Marine Corps during the Korean conflict. He began his Real Estate career September 14, 1955. He married the love of his life, Juanita, February 22, 1957 in Carson City, Nevada, and they spent their wedding night trying to get over Donner Summit during a huge snow storm so Juanita could get to San Francisco to take her Real Estate Brokers examination. Bill and Juanita spent the next almost 50 years in the Real Estate business, developing Valley West in Arcata, CA, as well as cattle ranching in Oregon and Northern California, and owning and operating three avocado groves in Southern California. Bill was president of the Humboldt County Board of Realtors in 1961, Realtor of the Year, and president of Baywood Golf and Country Club in 1971. Perhaps because of their humble beginnings, Bill and Juanita always had the desire to help worthy people in need. They have set up a fund with the Humboldt Area Foundation, named the "BILL AND JUANITA THOMPSON FUND FOR COMMUNITY BENEFIT". After providing for their heirs and college funds, the balance of the estate is donated to the Humboldt Area Foundation to distribute the income to Hospice, Cancer Society, Senior Resource Center, Alzheimers and other worthy charities. This distribution should exceed $200,000 per year for many years. Juanita died November 10, 2006 from pneumonia. Bill is survived by son Steven; daughter Laurie; brothers Jim and Jeff; sisters Allyne and Norma; and numerous nieces and nephews. At Bill's request, there will be no services. Care is under the direction of Pierce Mortuary, 707-442-3751. Condolences may be left at |
